Re: FIX THIS RULE! (please)

Bob, I'm going to dig down deep and summon as many of the brain cells I have left so I can explain the wording in a manner that helps you get a better grasp on the Slide or Surrender rule. Let's break the rule into 3 parts. Part 1) 'Play at the plate' shall refer to any instance where a fielder is ‘...

Re: FIX THIS RULE! (please)

All anyone has to do is read the catcher's eyes and body language. If the ball is coming in, the catcher's eyes and motions will tell you all you need to know.

Re: League Schedules Fall 2018

Well Mike... that would be the logical move, but when it comes to the Quarry ball field, Andy has the final word. I set things up for Cedar Hill, but am working on trying to get the Quarry. Not an easy task when you consider Andy has had it with this softball weather year just like a lot of other pe...

League Schedules Fall 2018

The plan to finish out the fall season of 2018 will include the use of Stover Park ball field in Telford Borough. Hatfield Township has abruptly shut down the School Road ball field for the rest of the year. Most leagues will be finishing things out on a different day/night than originally scheduled...

Re: FIX THIS RULE! (please)

Bob, here is your original post to open the thread. If we can't apply this rule consistently, we need to figure out another option. Why not use USA Softball rules for this instead of trying to make up our own, which don't seem to be applied anyway? Can we please look into this over the winter? I've ...

Re: FIX THIS RULE! (please)

I was merely defending the umpire who used the argument not catchable. Geez, Bob. Lighten up.

I still don't know what it is your'e looking for. What in your mind about this rule do you want me to change? What would make you happy?

Re: FIX THIS RULE! (please)

‘General vicinity’ shall mean within a couple feet of the plate. The catchable argument was brought up by the umpire who made the call. I think what he meant by that was the ball wasn't in the vicinity. That's all. I think you're splitting hairs here. Catchable is stated nowhere in the rule. The um...

Re: FIX THIS RULE! (please)

Bob, read the rule. I just posted it above. Here I'll post it again in its entirety. • SLIDE OR SURRENDER: PLAY AT THE PLATE - Umpires will call base runners out if they fail to slide or surrender when there is a play at the plate. 'Play at the plate' shall refer to any instance where a fielder is ‘...

Re: FIX THIS RULE! (please)

Here is the rule... Umpires will call base runners out if they fail to slide or surrender when there is a play at the plate. 'Play at the plate' shall refer to any instance where a fielder is ‘about to receive the ball’ in the ‘general vicinity’ of home plate. ‘About to receive the ball’ shall refer...

Re: FIX THIS RULE! (please)

If there is a play at the plate, whether the catcher catches the ball or not and the runner does not slide, hold the plate, or surrender, the runner should be called out for safety's sake. I feel like calling the rule this way could get dicey because it would be much easier for a catcher to just no...

Re: FIX THIS RULE! (please)

I couldn't agree more, Joe. The ASA version needs 2 calls - the one at the plate then 911.

Re: FIX THIS RULE! (please)

So the first baseman has the ball and is ready to throw home, where should the catcher stand? The catcher should be near the plate ready to catch the ball and make the play, of course. But, if the runner is at or near the plate and the first basemen is only ready to throw the ball, that is not cons...

Re: FIX THIS RULE! (please)

We can agree to disagree, Bob. If the catcher is standing there and the throw is 10' up the 1B line, there should be no call. Catchers have no business standing near the plate when the throw is nowhere near them ('uncatchable'). All umpires, new and veteran alike, have been informed of the need to g...

Re: FIX THIS RULE! (please)

There is a fine line between applying the rule for safety's sake and issuing cheap outs. If there is a play at the plate, whether the catcher catches the ball or not and the runner does not slide, hold the plate, or surrender, the runner should be called out for safety's sake. If the ball is not 'ca...

Re: Monday Evening Coed / Fall 2018

Sorry, Bill. I meant to answer this awhile ago. It's not that all the re-re-re-re-rescheduling has turned my brain to mush, it's that its turned it to MORE mush. The 1-4 game was a Wackers forfeit and the 7-10 game was a Bry-Lex forfeit.

Re: Sunday Evening Bowling 2018/19

Opening Day for off-season bowling is November 25th. There is a pre-season week of free bowling courtesy of Thunderbird Lanes on November 18th. Come out, bowl 3 games and get used to the atmosphere- all at no cost. At this point there are 24 teams with a few still in limbo. There will be no bowling ...
