Re: FIX THIS RULE! (please)

And I personally am making my adjustments when making the call. I have NOT made the call based on how the rule is written. I stand corrected and it will be called accordingly, no questions asked. That's my commitment to the league and players concerned with the inconsistency. That part I get and it'...

Re: FIX THIS RULE! (please)

IMHO, the fact that the ball must be catchable is moot. If the catcher is in the vicinity of the plate, and he/she has the right to be there (not blocking the plate), AND the ball arrives just before/after or at the same time as the runner, it shouldn't matter if it's catchable. We're trying to pro...

Re: FIX THIS RULE! (please)

Bob, the path you are heading in there will be a sub-rule to every rule and an amendment of some kind to answer just about every detail of the rule. At the end of it all...unless you are 100000% certain of there being no play, slide or surrender. This works beautifully for every team I manage. Just ...

Re: FIX THIS RULE! (please)

This debate raged when the rule was first implemented. Every argument here has been presented, and then some. It took about two years for the players to adjust. Now you hardly hear a peep. Is the call ever missed? Sure it is, much like any other play. He trapped it. He beat it. That was fair. That ...

Re: FIX THIS RULE! (please)

So, the catcher is waiting "in the vicinity" of the plate for a throw. The runner is coming into home. The ball sails over the catcher's head at the same time the runner crosses the plate. Or maybe the throw is just a little off target, maybe so much so that the catcher can't catch it. Ar...

Re: FIX THIS RULE! (please)

"'Play at the plate' shall refer to any instance where a fielder is ‘about to receive the ball’." And I know you do not believe that a ball headed to the parking lot is being received by the catcher. The only thing the catcher should care about at that moment is: 1. Who's car or person is...

Re: FIX THIS RULE! (please)

Yes. We're trying to protect the catcher and the runner. The catcher is in the vicinity of the plate. The play is happening. The catcher and runner are in close proximity of each other. Having the ball sail into the parking lot doesn't matter. Oh boy. No way that's gonna happen. Come on, I was expe...

Re: FIX THIS RULE! (please)

I think the fact the the ball is not catchable has no bearing on the rule being enforced. The catcher is in the vicinity at the time the ball and the player arrive. The runner needs to slide or surrender, regardless of the ball being catchable. The rule doesn't say anything about the ball being cat...

Re: FIX THIS RULE! (please)

So the first baseman has the ball and is ready to throw home, where should the catcher stand? Bob I think we are nick picking here. The catcher can stand at the plate area waiting to receive a throw. To Les' point, if the throw is them sailing waaaaay off the play, the catcher obviously can see tha...
