After reading an email from a Summer B West league member and looking over the stats, I discovered an error in the men's league yearly totals. One other point to take into consideration is the fact that a ball can cross the white portion of the plate and not hit the mat. That pitch would be called a ball when in reality it should be a strike. Without a mat, a skillful pitcher can use that to their advantage and some do on a regular basis. ...

As an aside, we use a ball/strike mat in the 1-pitch tournaments. Because the batter only gets 1 pitch to look at, I really don't want to put that much pressure on the batter or the umpire. In a regular game, if the umpire makes a questionable strike call, at least the batter has another opportunity...

Personally, I am not a fan of a ball/strike mat. Because the strike zone changes with the height of the batter, the use of a mat favors the taller batter and places the vertically challenged batter at a disadvantage.
