7.1.18 - B-West Championship

Post by tommyC »

MaGerks knew they had their work cut out for them, attempting to take down the 8-0 SCLSU Mud Dogs in the Spring B-West Championship. Would MaGerks rise to the occasion, or would the Mud Dogs continue sailing their way to a perfect season?

Game 1 – MaGerks at SCLSU Mud Dogs
MaGerks came out hard in the first, scoring a quick 2 runs as Steve Walker singled and Anthony Maddoni doubled. Three fielder’s choices in a row would cut the inning short, though. In the second, it was a trio of singles and a walk that set the stage for Steve Walker’s huge 2-RBI triple, putting MaGerks up 6-0 on the undefeated Mud Dogs. More of the same in the third, as Rich Houser blasted a 2-run bomb, extending the MaGerks lead to 8-0 before Walker tripled again, this time in the fourth, putting MaGerks on top by 10!
The Mud Dogs FINALLY put some runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth, as Kris Carr led off the inning with a triple. Later in the inning, Chris Refsnider added an RBI double, forcing across the second Dogs run of the inning, narrowing the gap to a TD and a 2.
MaGerks put the finishing touches on a brilliant game in the fifth. Brian Hilbert kicked things off with a solo bomb. 5 singles, a double from Jim Malloy, and a walk set up the game’s hero, Steve Walker, for a 3-run blast, putting MaGerks comfortably ahead, 18-2.
Kavit Solanski doubled and Kris Carr bombed a 3-run homer in the bottom of the fifth, helping the Mud Dogs to cut the deficit to 12, but that’s where the rally would end.
MaGerks beat up on the undefeated regular season champs in game 1, putting the heavy favorites back on their heels for game 2.
Final Score: MaGerks 18 SCLSU Mud Dogs 6
Player of the Game: Kris Carr had some big hits for the Dogs in this one, but hands down, the star of game 1 was Steve Walker. He went 4 for 4 with 2 triples and a homerun, including 6 RBIs and 3 Runs Scored.

Game 2 – SCLSU Mud Dogs at MaGerks
More often than not in a 3-game series, the winner of game 2 wins the series. MaGerks was looking to finish off the high-scoring Dogs before the offense could get going.
The Dogs struck first blood in this one, as Kavit Solanski led off the game with a single and later scored on Kris Carr’s RBI single. MaGerks went right to work in the bottom half, though, picking up where they left off in game one. Steve Walker led things off with a triple, continuing his torrid play. A barrage of singles followed, as MaGerks grabbed the early 4-1 lead.
After a quiet second, the Dogs crawled back into it in the third, scoring 2 thanks to a Matt Figueroa double and a trio of singles.
MaGerks punched back in the fourth though, taking full control of this one. 3 singles and a walk started things up before Jeff Tongue blasted a GRAND SLAM. After a Steve Walker single, Anthony Maddoni added a homer of his own, putting MaGerks up by 8. In the fifth, MaGerks tacked on some insurance runs, thanks to John Green’s 2-run homer, making it a 10-point game.
The Mud Dogs dug down deep in the sixth, hoping to spark a rally and steal game 2 before taking over the series in game 3. Chris Refsnider and Kavit Solanski both smacked 2-RBI doubled, accounting for all 4 runs that scored in the inning, reducing the deficit to 6.
After shutting MaGerks down in the bottom of the sixth, the Mud Dogs attempted to mount the big seventh-inning rally. Kris Carr led off the inning with a solo homer. Good start. Brian Figueroa walked to follow. After a fly-out, Sam Matos singled, putting 2-on with just 1 out. Just when the rally started to look doable, Chris Refsnider and Justin Molfese both grounded into fielder’s choices, cutting the rally short.
MaGerks held on to win game 2 and the series.
Final Score: MaGerks 13 SCLSU Mud Dogs 8
Player of the Game: It was his only hit, but Jeff Tongue’s Grand Slam came at the perfect time, giving him the honors for the game. Jeff went 1 for 3 with that homer, 4 RBIs and a Run Scored.

Congrats to MaGerks – B-West Spring Champions
Series MVP: This one’s gotta go to Steve Walker. He followed his game 1 inhuman performance with a very solid game 2, going 6 for 8 with 3 triples, a homerun, 6 RBIs and 5 Runs Scored in the series.
