Softball is back! A chilly start to the spring season, but a lot of familiar faces and a new team are all vying to be the Beasts of the East!

CB West

Game 1: Amber Inn vs. Billy Goats

Amber Inn get things started by taking advantage of a leadoff error, then stroking three straight singles to open a 3 run lead in the top of the first. In the top of the second, they bat around including a bases clearing triple by Phil Klatch and back-to-back solo jacks from Mark McKinney and Mike Haberle on their way to seven runs. In the top of the third, they keep rolling thanks to another Mark McKinney triple followed by an RBI double from Bruce Snyder. Billy Goats hold their opponents silent in the top of the fourth, then get on the board with three runs thanks to five straight singles including Kevin Vaunter’s which drove in two. In the top of the sixth, Amber Inn add three runs all driven in by a homer from Mike Haberle. Billy Goats answer back in the bottom of the frame, getting a leadoff solo bomb from Tommy Thornton and a three run dinger from the bat of Mark Mandel. In the top of the seventh, Amber Inn add six insurance runs thanks to a two run double by Bruce Snyder and a two run big fly off the bat of Mike Haberle. Billy Goats only manage one hit in the bottom of the seventh as they fall to Amber Inn 21-8.

Man of the Match: Mike Haberle (4-5, 3 R, 3 HR, 7 RBI)


Lukens III

Game 2: Misfits vs. Holding Hands with Hookers

In the top of the first, Misfits get on the board with three runs on a walk and three singles including a two run base knock from Nick Perez. In the bottom of the frame, Evan Gruber doubles in a run for HHWH. In the bottom of the second, HHWH tie it up thanks to an RBI single from Gary Brooks and doubles from Wes Otte and Dan Curran. Misfits reopen their lead by batting around in the top of the third on a walk, a sac fly, six singles, and a double from Chris Quinn, scoring seven. HHWH do tack on one run in the bottom of the third, then plate two more in the fourth as Gary Brooks roped a two run triple. In the top of the fifth, Glen Davis leads off with a triple, then four singles help them net two. HHWH come storming back in the bottom of the fifth with Wes Otte ripping a two run double and the rest of the team pitching in five base hits and a walk, scoring five and finding themselves down just one run. Misfits, not to be outdone, come up with seven runs in the top of the sixth with Chris Quinn leading off with a double and Nick Perez diving in a pair on a triple. HHWH are silent in the bottom of the sixth and the game would end there as Misfits earn a 19-11 win.

Man of the Match: Chris Quinn (4-4, 3 R, 2-2B, RBI)

Game 3: Philly’s Phinest vs. Tropics

Tropics get on the scoreboard first in this tilt, plating two as Shawn Thome drove them both in on a base knock. In the top of the third, Philly’s Phinest take the lead by batting around and scoring four on a walk and six consecutive singles. In the bottom of the frame, Tropics also bat around, featuring doubles from Brian Sexton, Tim Simmons, and Sean Rozzi, scoring eight runs to retake the lead. Tropics push one across the dish in the bottom of the fourth as Bryan McMenamin reaches on and error and scored. In the top of the fifth, Philly’s Phinest get a walk, and RBI triple from Mike Rocks, and an RBI single from Ed Rocks to push two across the dish and cut their deficit to five. Jay Meikrantz led off the bottom of the sixth by launching a triple, then later scored Tropics’ lone run of the inning to extend their lead. Philly’s Phinest fail to score in the final frame as Tropics secure a 12-6 victory.

Man of the Match: Shawn Thome (2-3, R, 3 RBI)


Game 4: Dirty Dozen vs. Santucci’s

The first run came in the top of the second as Dirty Dozen drew three straight walks and got a sac fly to push the opening run across the dish. In the top of third, they plate four thanks to doubles from Ben and Nick Vitelli and Todd Gibson. Santucci’s get on the board in the bottom of the fourth by plating a pair on a walk and a few singles. Dirty Dozen respond by batting around in the top of the fifth featuring a bases clearing double from Ben Vitelli and a triple from Nick Vitelli as they hang seven on the board. In the bottom of the frame, Santucci’s gets one back as Zach Victor singled and later scored on a fielder’s choice. Dirty Dozen tack on five insurance runs thanks in large part to James McHale launching a Grand Slam to put the final nail in Santucci’s coffin. Dirty Dozen trample Santucci’s 17-3.

Man of the Match: Ben Vitelli (3-4, 3 R, BB, 2B, 3B, 3 RBI)
