Post by tommyC »

Spring arrived just in the nick of time for this week’s games, providing the first chance for fair-weather Sunday morning games of the year.

Game 1 – MaGerks (2-1) @ Mud Dogs (2-0)
MaGerks got the party started in the top of the first with a trio of hits, including an RBI double from Brian Hibert, that totaled 3 early runs. After the Mud Dogs got 1 back in the second, MaGerks went back to work in the third. A single and a walk set up Steve Walker for his 3-run bomb, giving his team the 6-1 lead.
MaGerks offense went quiet in the 4th and 5th, though, going 1-2-3 in ach inning. Meanwhile, the Mud Dogs got 3 back in the 4th on a huge triple by Sam matos and then 3 more in the 5th thanks to good, quality station-to-station ball.
Suddenly trailing for the first time all game, MaGerks attempted a comeback. Despite getting 2 runners on in each the 6th and 7th, they couldn’t plate the tying run and the Mud Dogs hung on for the W.
Final Score: Mud Dogs 7 (3-0) MaGerks 6 (2-2)
Player of the Game: The middle of the lineup got the job done for the Dogs, with Sam Matos leading the way. He went 3 for 3 with a triple, 4 RBIs and 1 Run Scored.

Game 2 – Jackhammers (2-0) @ MaGerks (2-2)
Playing in their fifth game in three weeks, MaGerks was looking to stay above the Mendoza line with a win in game two.
This game featured a slow start, as the teams combined for just 1 run in the first 2 full innings, with the Jackhammers holding the narrow edge. In the third, the Jackhammers increased their lead to 3-0 with a handful of singles and walks. The lead didn’t last long as MaGerks loaded the bases and got a huge 3-run triple from Anthony Maddoni, taking the lead 4-3 in the process.
MaGerks kept the momentum through the 4th and 5th, adding 1 run in the 4th and then 5 more in the fifth, utilizing a ton of singles in the process. Jim Malloy added the exclamation point with his 2-run double in the fifth to put the team up by 7 and putting the onus on the Jackhammers to come back.
Down, but not out, the Jackhammers trung together some singles and scored 1 in the 6th and managed to load the bases in the 7th, but could only muster 2 in the 7th in large part because Kevin Rosini left early on a would-be sac fly, turning a rally-run into a rally-killing out.
Final Score: MaGerks 10 (3-2) Jackhammers (2-1)
Player of the Game: Anthony Maddoni didn’t have his best game, only going 1 for 3, but that hit was clutch. Maddoni had a triple, 4 RBI’s and 1 Run Scored.

Game 3 – Jackhammers (2-1) @ Baron Von Fritz (3-0)
After shutting down the Jackhammers in the top of the first, Baron went to work, turning 2 singles and an error into 2 early runs. After the Jackhammers clawed their way to a run in the second, Baron erupted for 6 more of their own. Things again started with a defensive error, but then 3 singles and a walk set up Steve Hausman for his big 2-run double, giving Baron a nice, early 8-1 cushion.
The Jackhammers managed to get a run back in the 3rd and then Chris Day delivered an RBI double in the 4th, narrowing the edge to 8-3. This is as close as the game would get, as Baron scored another in the 4th, and then the teams traded runs in the 6th. In the seventh, down by 6 runs, the Jackhammers meekly went down 1-2-3.
Final Score: Baron Von Fritz 10 (4-0) Jackhammers 4 (2-2)
Player of the Game: Steve Hausman went 2 for 4 with an important double, 3 RBIs and 2 Runs Scored.

Game 4 – Hambinos (1-1) @ Randazzos Pizza (0-2)
This one was all Hambinos early-on. In the first, with 2 runners on, Tony Stevens delivered a 2-run double, giving his team the early 2-0 edge. In the 3rd, 2 errors and 2 doubles from Spencer Slutsky and Mark Peasley helped the Hambinos to plate 5, increasing their lead to 7-0. In the 4th, Slutsky smacked another double, this time scoring 2 as the Hambinos put up 3 more, upping their lead to 10. A trio of singles tacked on another run, making it 11-0 heading into the bottom of the 6th.
Perhaps, being a 9:00 game, the guys from Randazzos simply needed to shake off a fun Saturday night and it took them until 10:00 or so to do it, but the bats woke up in the 6th. Pete Corrigan kicked things off with a triple, scoring on the next play. A pair of singles helped Randazzos to score another, cutting the lead to 11-2.
Looking for some insurance runs, the Hambinos loaded the bases before Tony Stevens delivered a clutch 2-RBI single, increasing their lead to 14-2. In the bottom half, needing a huge comeback, Randazzos went to work. 2 runners reached base before Anthony Miller delivered a 2-RBI triple, cutting the deficit to 10. After 2 more singles, Ryan Legeckas notched an RBI double, cutting the Hambino lead to 8. Angelo Miller reached on another, scoring Legekas and then Paul Schenk grounded out to the pitcher, but Miller scored on runner indifference. Now down by only 6, but with the bases empty, it was up to Greg Taylor to restart the rally. Unfortunately, there were no more heroics to be found, as Taylor grounded out to short to end the game.
Final Score: Hambinos 14 (2-1) Randazzos Pizza 8 (0-3)
Player of the Game: Spencer Slutsky paced the Hambinos all day, going 3 for 3 plus a walk with 2 doubles, 2 RBIs and 3 Runs Scored.

Game 5 – Backdoor Sliders (0-2-1) @ Hambinos (2-1)
The Sliders put up an early run in the top of the first before the Hambinos carried their offensive momentum over from game 1. 2 early singles set Bradd Gower up for a 2-run double, helping the Hambinos to an early 3-1 lead. The Sliders knotted the score at 3, using 3 singles to do so in the 2nd before the Hambinos reclaimed the lead 4-3 in the third on 2 singles of their own.
In the 4th, the Sliders tied it once more, stringing together 3 more singles including an RBI single from Garth Pitcarin. In the 5th, the Sliders took their first lead since the top of the first, using 3 more singles including an RBI drive from John Bisceglie.
The game turned into a defensive battle from there, with both teams only managing a single hit the rest of the way.
Final Score: Backdoor Sliders 5 (1-2-1) Hambinos 4 (2-2)
Player of the Game: Bradd Gower did all he could, despite the ultimate loss, contributing to all 4 Hambino runs, going 3 for 3 with a double, 2 RBIs and 2 Runs Scored.

Game 6 – Isotopes (0-2-1) @ Hattricks Sports Bar (0-2)
Both squads were looking for their first win in this matchup.
The Isotopes for an early run, and then Hattricks took the lead in the bottom of the 2nd, adding another run for good measure in the 3rd. In the 4th, Hattricks strung together 3 singles and incrased their lead to 4-1.
The offenses finally got going in the 6th. After an error and a singlr, Jayson Banks delivered an RBI triple, helping the Isotopes to tie the game at 4-4. Hattricks reclaimed the lead in the bottom half when Matt Bookheimer sacrificed himself, putting his team up 6-4.
The Isotopes kept on rolling in the 7th. With 2 men on, Ryan Greenberg came up clutch with his 2-run double, followed by Mike Ivers with his RBI reiple. After Colin Snyder scored Ivers on a sac fly, the Isotopes looked to hold their first lead since the top of the first, 8-6. With one out in the bottom half, Josh Graef halved the deficit with his solo homer. Needing just 1 run to tie, the magic ran out there, as Both Kyle Ramsah and Jordan Glasure flew out to center to end the game.
