5.6.18 - B-West

Post by tommyC »

Week four marks the halfway point of the Spring session, which means the time has come for teams to start making their playoff push.

Game 1 – Randazzos (0-3) at Isotopes (1-2-1)
This was simply not Randazzos day. They got on the board with a run in the top of the first as Pete Corrigan delivered an RBI single, but that was about as good as it got all day long. In the bottom half, the Isotopes used 2 triples (Paul Mizvitowicz, Carlos Herring) and a long bomb from Trevor Lane to put up 4 runs.
Randazzos got one back in the top of the second, making it a 4-2 game, before the Isotopes offense went hog wild. 4 walks, 4 doubles (Ryan Greenberg, Mike Ivers, Jayson Banks, Howard Miller) and a 2-RBI triple from Marc Miller added up to 11 runs, putting the ‘Topes up by a TD and 2 FGs.
After a quiet third, the Isotopes scored another in the 4th and then put the game away in the 5th, as Howard Miller doubled and scored on Carlos Herring’s 2-run homer, enacting the mercy rule.
Final Score: Isotopes 18 (2-2-1) Randazzos 2 (0-4)
Player of the Game: Carlos Herring went 2 for 3 on the day with a triple and a homerun, 3 RBIs and a Run Scored.

Game 2 – SCLSU Mud Dogs (3-0) at Baron Von Fritz (4-0)
The battle of the only two remaining unbeatens…would it live up to the hype.
Almost like the first period of a playoff hockey or basketball game, the first inning had a “feeling each other out” vibe to it. But then the teams went to work in the second, as the Mud Dogs used a trio of triples by Jason Figueroa, Sam Matos and Max Malloy to plate 3 runs. In the bottom half, 2 singles and a Craig Stewart RBI double knotted the score at 3.
The Mud Dogs would get a single run in each of the next 3 innings. Ben Daniels tripled in the third, while a slew of singles helped them to score in the 4th and 5th. After two scoreless innings, Baron finally got things going again in the 5th with a solo homer from Chris Salanik.
The teams traded runs in the sixth before the Mud Dogs attempted to put the game away in the seventh. Up 7-5, a solo homer from Kavit Solanki and a pair of doubles from Ben Daniels and Josh Figueroa added up to a pair, making it 9-5. Looking to rally, Baron got things going with a walk from Kevin Ladden. 3 doubles (Steve Hausman, Matt Leasure, Ryan Garner) would be spread out throughout the inning, helping to knot the game at 9. With a runner on second and a chance to be the hero, Frankie Fusca launched the ball into right field, but it was caught, sending this one to extras.
Wasting no time, the Mud Dogs Kris Carr launched a 3 run bomb before a single out was recording. A single and a walk set the stage for Ben Daniels, who launched his own 3-run dinger, extending the Dogs’ lead to 6. In the bottom half, Baron was looking for some more rally magic. With two on and one run already across, Dan Keith smacked a 2-RBI triple, halving the Mud Dog lead. But the rally would fall short one batter later, as Brandon Rock flew out to end the game.
This one lived up to the hype.
Final Score: SLSU Mud Dogs 15 (4-0) Baron Von Fritz 12 (4-1)
Player of the Game: Ben Daniels had himself a day, hitting for the cycle. Ben went 5 for 6 including a double, triple and homerun, 4 RBIs and 3 Runs Scored.

Game 3 – Jackhammers (2-2) at Hattricks (0-3)
The Jackhammers came out swinging from the opening pitch. 5 singles in the first amounted to 3 early runs. They added 2 more in the second thanks to a Bill Moore double and a Glen Hipple 2-RBI single. After a quiet third for the Hammers, Hattricks finally for on the board, kickstarted by Basil Papanikolopoulos’ double.
Leading 5-2, the Jackhammers used Bill Moore’s double and a handful of singles to tack on 3 more in the 4th and then a trio of doubles from Mike Wadsworth, Bill Moore and Glen Hipple to pile on another 4 in the fifth. Now down 12-2, Hattricks had to start digging out. With one on, Pat O’Leary launched a ball over the fence for a 2-run homer, but the comeback would halt there.
2 walks and 4 singles would amount to 4 insurance runs for the Jackhammers in the 6th. There was barely even a comeback attempt from there, as Hattricks went down in order in the bottom of the sixth and managed just one base hit in the seventh.
Final Score: Jackhammers 16 (3-2) Hattricks 4 (0-4)
Player of the Game: Bill Moore seemed to be involved in everything for the Jackhammers, going 4 for 4 with 3 doubles, an RBI and 3 Runs Scored.

Game 4 – MaGerks (3-2) at Hambinos (2-2)
Jim Malloy smacked an RBI double in the top of the first, helping to give MaGerks an early 2-0 lead, but the Hambinos quickly tied the score thanks to 3 singles in the bottom half. In the second, 3-straight walks jumpstarted the inning, which was capped off with back-to-back RBI doubles from Ryan Bell and Jim Malloy. 6 runners crossed the dish in all. In the bottom half, the Hambinos managed to get one back, making it 8-3.
After a quiet third all around, Brian Hilbert doubled for MaGerks, helping to make it 10-3. After the Hambinos got one back in the bottom half, MaGerks went off in the fifth. Singles and walks set the stage before Brian Hilbert delivered a 3-RBI double. Two batters later, Malloy smacked his third RBI double of the game, putting MaGerks up 17-4.
The game was pretty uneventful the rest of the way, as MaGerks added a long insurance run in the sixth and a demoralized Hambinos squad struggled to get anything else going at all.
Final Score: MaGerks 18 (4-2) Hambinos 4 (2-3)
Player of the Game: Jim Malloy seemed to be the straw that stirred McGerks drink on this particular day, going 4 for 5 with 3 doubles, 5 RBIs and a Run Scored.
