B North 4/7/19 Opening Day

Post by Jmill1734 »

:!: The North :!:

SOFTBALLLLLLLLLLL... Consistently Competitive: Two words that sum up the B North over the past 2 years. Most all of the teams have won the championship or made a great run at softball glory. This competition level has forged rivalries set in stone, that will spark memories for years. Let’s take a moment to see what the first week of the 2019 season looked like…

Game 1: Insurance Runs v Sons of Pitches

The season got off to a tough start for the highly touted new comers. Brandon Brooks led the way for SOP with a solid 2 for 2 outing including the first extra base hit of the season for them, on a scorched double in the 2nd inning. Josh Owens, Joe Giampietro, Paul Elliott, Andy Markowitz, and Derek Myers would also start the season with hits as they notched singles throughout the competition. The Insurance Runs on the other hand, have a knack for picking up where they leave off, smoking balls all of the yard, despite the fact that they only play every other season. A good ol’ fashioned bat around for the Runs in the first saw decisive blows dealt by Bill McElroy, Brandon Quinn, and Matt Hickey as they all doubled and was highlighted by a Matt Freedman 3 run bomb to give them an early 7 run lead. It was fun for everyone to hit in the first so in the 2nd they decided to have everyone hit twice. A double bat around lit up the scoreboard as Colin Beatty (2), Rick Leonetti and Keith Meduza doubled, Brandon Quinn and Matt Freedman tripled, and Seth Mattleman (2) Shane Banana, Freedman, and Josh Hannum cranked homers. In the 3rd, another Banana homer, combined with doubled from Freedman, Beatty, and Rowan capped the scoring.

Final Score: Insurance Runs 28 - Sons of Pitches 0

Game 2: Dark Horse v Sons of Pitches

Dark Horse stormed out of the gate to the tune of two runs in the first on singles. They will add to that total in the 2nd inning, scoring 8 runs as Johnny Walker homered, Ryan Shock ripped a double and Bill Jones slapped a three bagger. A new double bat around in the 3rd would blow the game open as Walker and Harding doubled, Paul Ferruzi doubled and tripled, and Ryan Shock smoked a triple and a homer, highlighting a 17 run effort. In the 4th they would tack on 3 more via the single to top off their scoring for the day. The scrappy Sons of Pitches saw Derek Myers double in the first run of the season in the first inning. They would push another run across in the 3rd inning as Matt Fronheiser started the inning with a single and he was scored three batters later by a smoked shot off the bat of Paul Elliot. Brandon Brooks continued his strong early season hitting as he cranked a sultry two run two bagger in the 4th.

Final Score: Dark Horse 28 - Sons of Pitches 4

Game 3: One Hit Wonders v Dark Horse

Game three saw two heavy hitters square off as DH and OHWs slugged it out. In the first inning OHWs jump out to an early lead as two singles led to a Andy Springer 3-run jack, which was followed up by a Mike Trivino triple and a sac fly to score him. DH would answer with 2 runs of their own via a Ryan Schock RBI triple and a Bill Jones RBI single. Both teams would scrap to get a run in the 2nd inning to keep the game close. A monster 7 run inning from the OHWs would blow the game open in the 3rd inning as Colby Schoeller doubled to start the party, Andy Springer brought the main course with a triple, and Jason Hammer topped the dessert with a two RBI double. After a strong defensive inning, the OHWs hit party continued as they would push across 7 more runs via doubles from Owens, Trivino and Springer. Battling back DH hammered home 5 runs via a gaggle of singles and a double from Dave Ketterlinus. A quiet inning from OHWs allowed for another strong inning from DH as they are able to cut into the deficit once again with 5 more runs by way of singles and timely errors. That would be as close as they would get in this one though as OHWs would close the door in the 6th with a run via singles.

Final Score: One Hit Wonders s 20 - Dark Horse 14

Game 4: Misfits v Yankee Clippers

A Nick Manini double, combined with two singles and two errors opened the scoring for the YCs as they are able to put together a nice little 4 run inning to start the game. The YCs fired up the offense again in the 2nd but doubles from Kai Browner and Lonnie Snyder could not produce a run. After a good defensive stand, the Misfits garnered their first run of the season by way of three singles. Three singles and a 3 run Andrew Breiscraft homer would pace the YCs in the 3rd. Matt Ottinger started his season off with a bang as he doubled and scored for the Ms in the bottom half of the inning. After some defensive exchanges, the Ms would cut the deficit in half in the 5th inning as Tim Graf annihilated a two run homer. Putting things away late, the YCs capitalize on opportunities to score two more runs in the 7th, highlighted by a Nick Todd trifecta.

Final Score: Yankee Clippers 10 - Misfits 4
