B-East opens the Spring season up with a close, defensive game before the bats start to get warm and lots of runs come in on Opening Day.

Game 1: Amber Inn vs. Dirt Stars

Dirt Stars claim the first B-East runs of the year, plating three in the top of the third thanks to Dan Owens clearing the bases on his base hit. In the top of the fourth, Corey Carlen responds for Amber Inn, ripping a triple to score their first run. In the bottom of the fifth, Dirt Stars add to their total, opening the frame with four straight singles, highlighted by an RBI double from Dan
Owens. In the top of the sixth, Amber Inn claw one more run back thanks to a Phil Klatch triple. The next inning, Amber Inn draw a walk and then poke a couple of two out RBI singles for their first crooked number of the day, but they’d fall just short of tying this one up. Dirt Stars edge past Amber Inn 5-4.

Man of the Match: Dan Owens (3-3, 2-2B, 4 RBI)

Game 2: SCLSU Mud Dogs vs. The Tropics

The top of the first is a productive one, Mud Dogs riding five singles and a Matt Figueroa double to a quick four run lead. Tropics answer back with four runs of their own as Greg Thompson, Shawn Thome, and Bryan McMenamin roping doubles. Matt Figueroa smacks a two run dinger to put Mud Dogs up two in the top of the second. In the top of the fourth, they extend their lead, batting around their nine man lineup on a walk and six singles to open their lead to 10-4. Tropics wake up in the bottom of the fifth as Tim Simmons and Brian Sexton double on their way to five runs, cutting their deficit to just one. Batting around in the top of the sixth, Matt Figueroa, Sam Matos, and Matt Greaver smoke doubles to help plate eight runs for Mud Dogs, reestablishing their big lead. A leadoff double from Bryan McMenamin allowed him to cross the plate, but Tropics would fizzle out in the end. Mud Dogs break away from Tropics and win 18-10.

Man of the Match: Matt Figueroa (3-3, 4 R, 2 BB, 2-2, HR, 5 RBI)

Game 3: SCLSU Mud Dogs vs. Bulldogs

Kavit Solanki leads this one off with a base knock and scored on a sac fly to get Mud Dogs on the board first. In the bottom of the first, Bulldogs respond by taking the lead on four singles, plating three. With four straight singles to start the top of the second, Mud Dogs push three across the dish, tilting the lead back to themselves. Bulldogs, equal to the task, get a leadoff double from Dave Nagle, hit a single, and force an error to score a pair and retake the lead in the bottom of the second. The next inning, they plate three more thanks to Paul Burtis cranking a leadoff dinger followed by a triple from CC Witt and a double by Dave Nagle. The bottom of the fourth is a huge one for Bulldogs as they bat around on five doubles, triples from Mike Suda and Matt Lagomarsino, and a two run big fly off the bat of Paul Burtis. Mud Dogs would scrape one back in the top of the fifth, but the mercy rule would come into effect in this one, ending their day. Bulldogs crush Mud Dogs 20-5.

Man of the Match: Paul Burtis (4-4, 4 R, 2B, 2 HR, 6 RBI)

Game 4: Dirty Dozen vs. Philly’s Phinest

Four runners cross the dish in the top of the first for Dirty Dozen, helped by Todd Gibson’s double, and Angelo Vitantonio’s triple. Philly’s Phinest quickly get even with four of their own on four singles, a walk, and an error. Angelo Vitantonio and James McHale double in the top of the second, helping Dirty Dozen plate three. Back-to-back doubles from Val Mendez and Tony Summers get Philly’s Phinest back on the board with a run in the bottom of the third. James McHale crushes a three run bomb for Dirty Dozen in the top of the fourth, putting them up 10-5. In the bottom of the fifth, Ed Rocks and Mike Repici each knock in a run on a double and triple respectively, cutting into their deficit. In the bottom of the sixth, Philly’s Phinest smack seven singles (five of them with two outs) on their way to a five run frame to take a late lead. Having been retired in order since a leadoff single in the top of the fifth, Dirty Dozen go down 1-2-3 again in the top of the seventh to seal their defeat. Philly’s Phinest beat Dirty Dozen 12-10.

Man of the Match: Tony Summers (4-4, 3 R, 2B, 4 RBI)
