B North 8/2 and playoff preview

Post by Jmill1734 »

As the summer season of Covid comes to an end… well the summer season, not so much the covid part… we are going to try something a little different this week and do a quick blurb about the games followed by a playoff preview so please respond at the end of the article with feedback whether you like it or not!

Game 1: Phinny’s v Amber Inn

Phinny’s jumps out to an early lead in this one and never looks back. They hammered home 5 in the first on doubles from Gary and Jim, and a monster bomb by Woody (none of your last names were in the book btw). Gary T, being MR T. today also doubled and scored in the 2nd. They followed up with 6 runs the rest of the way highlighted by a two run blast from young padwan Kerns and a triple by Derek or Berek depending on how you read the handwriting. Amber Inn smacked a bunch of hits in this one but they were never able to capitalize on base runners and only were able to push across 1 in the 4th.

Final Score: Phinnys 12 - Amber Inn 1

Game 2: Phinnys v Dark Horse

Dark Horse scored in each of the first four innings as they get a run in the first on singles and errors, two in the 2nd on singles, 1 in the 3rd on a Jason Hortachek double, and 3 in the 3rd Jimmy Walker, cagey veteran crushes a double to lead the charge. Phinny’s battled back all game, scoring 6 in the first on a Woody 3 run bomb, 9 in the 3rd on singles, a Gary double and a Woody triple, one in each the 4th and 5th on walks and singles, and 3 in the third as extra base hits by Ryan and Pat do the damage.

Final Score: Phinnys 20 v Dark Horse 7

Game 3: MIsfits v Ballz Deep

The Misfits had a tough time getting their big bats going in this one as they are only able to manage a run in the 1st on singles and 2 in the 3rd on four hits and an error. Ballz Deep did a ton of damage in the 2nd as they plate 9 in walks and a Jacob McDevitt homer because he refused to look at pitches to both the delight and dismay of Gene. They would also plate 7 the rest of the way highlighted by a bunch of singles from the whole lineup and doubles from both Matt Nixon and Alex Metz.

Final Score: Ballz Deep 16 - Misfits 3

Game 4: Yankee Clippers v Misfits

The Yankee Clippers and their fast paced scoring offense had a tough time getting off the tarmac in this one as they are only able to plate two in the 2nd inning on singles and 3 in the 5th inning on a Nick ‘the stick” Wasekanes homer. The Misfits were able to bounce back, as they found their strokes early and often, plating 6 in the first on doubles from Dan Cripps, Chris Quinn, and Josh Persing. They followed up with a bat around 10 spot in the 2nd, highlighted by Cripps’ 2nd double and a butt ton of singles. Capping their day was a 4 run 4th inning in which Quinn decided to pass 2nd and hustle into 3rd for a 2 RBI triple.

FInal Score: Misfits 20 - Yankee Clippers 5

Playoff Preview:

Game 1: Ballz Deep (4) v Yankee Clippers (5)

Ballz Deep finished the season 4 and 4. They typically do not worry too much about the regular season as this group of cagey veterans has been there and done that in B North for years. Led by Joe Dimezza who led the team with a whopping 600 batting average and sweet swinging Jacob McDevitt who cranked 2 homers to lead the group, Ballz Deep will rely on experience, passion and some good ol’ fashioned Gene pep talks to get the runs they need for a deep playoff run.

The Yankee Clippers ended their campaign 2-5-1. The scary part of their team is they as much as anyone have the ability to explode offensively and drop a 20-bomb on anyone they play. Over the season they smack a respectable 9 homers, led by hammer Nick Wasekanes (3). Speedster Andre O’Donnell led the way with a hot hitting 609 batting average and a guy they will need in the playoff Kai Browner who hit 750 with 2 homers after only 4 games. If the offense shows up they are a legit contender to win it all.

Game 2: Phinnys (3) v Misfits (2)

In a semi-final game the upstart Phinny’s team is in the hunt to do what Mixed Nutz hasn’t done for years and win an SBA title. In something that seems like a typo but is definitely not, the best booty in the B division Curt Hensman led the team with a whopping 688 average and 9 RBI, while Woody Darling and Jarrett Kerns hammered home 6 HRs combined. Can the team from Bristol Borough make the trek to Horsham and win a championship or will they run out of toll money and come up short? It surely will be exciting to see how they do in their first playoff game.

The Misfits come into this semi-final boasting the best offense in B North. Boasting a whopping 107 RBI as a team, 4 players eclipsed the 10 RBI mark led by sweet swinging Dan Cripps and his 793 average. Jim Kash “money” and “joltin” Joe Torres each smacked three homers during the summer campaign to add pop to this dangerous lineup. The big question for the Misfits will be, does the team that showed up in their first game sunday come to play, or the team that dropped a 20 bomb in the 2nd show up? If they hit the way they are capable WATCH OUT B North because you could be looking at your champions.

Playing the waiting game: Dark Horse (1)

WIth a perfect combination of age and beauty, Dark Horse looks to contend for another title as they do nearly every season. The combination of Paul Ferruzi, and Nick Mariana carried the offense as they each hammered home 10 runs, scored 10 runs and cranked a homer. They also got huge contributions from most of the lineup including former enemy Jack Stepnowski joining them for the season. Dark Horse has all the tools to get the job done, so as they await the winner of the 4-5 game, the only question is whether they can get the engine going quick enough to defeat a team who already has a game under their belt that day. If they do, they will be a favorite regardless of their competition on championship sunday.

Unfortunately Amber Inn, which is a team composed of a ton of talent, struggled this summer. John Fine played his way into the MVP conversation despite their record as he smacked 3 HRs, plated 20 RBI and hit 667. Marc McKinney was not far behind as he smoked 2 HRs, brought in 17 runs and hit 556. As all teams have done in this division over the past for years, we all expect Amber Inn to reload and come back in the fall with a vengeance to compete for the fall championships.
