7.29.18 - B-West

Post by tommyC »

July rain has washed out quite a few games, so some of these teams haven’t played in weeks. Let’s see if it’ll slow down the offenses:

Game 1 – Spartans (1-0) at Legends (0-1)
It was a slow first inning for sure, as the Spartans went 1-2-3 and if not for 4 walks, Legends also may not have scored a run. As it was, the score was 1-0 Legends after one.
Jay Cowan kicked off the second with a double for the Spartans. 3 singles would help his squad to score 2 and take the lead.
In the third, the Spartans added 3 more, thanks in large prt to B2B RBI doubles from Cowan and Mike Capell. In the bottom half, 4 more walks contributed to 3 runs for the Legends.
The fourth inning belonged to the Spartans. 4 singles and 3 walks equaled 5 runs, but then the fifth inning belonged to the Legends, as 11 runners crossed the dish. 6 singles, 6 walks, and a big RBI double from Pat Feliciani did the damage, as the Legends pulled ahead 15-10.
Shell-shocked, the Spartans went down 1-2-3 in the sixth before the Legends put up another 7 runs. Walks again contributed to the damage, as a combo of 4 walks, 4 singles and an RBI double from Jimmy Beaumeister propelled the surge.
Suddenly down 12, the Spartans needed a big rally in the seventh, and it never materialized. Legends won this one going away.
Final Score: Legends 22 (1-1) Spartans 10 (1-1)
Player of the Year: In a losing effort, Jay Cowan may have had the best day, going 2 for 3 plus a walk with 2 doubles, 2 RBIs and 2 Runs Scored.

Game 2 – E’s Irish Pub (1-1) at Backdoor Sliders (3-0)
Things escalated quickly in this one, as 3 singles set the stage before Mark Kennedy blasted a big double helping E’s to score 4 early runs. The Sliders knotted the score right back up in the bottom half, as Blasé Contino smacked a 2-RBI double.
In the second, Tom Collins started the scoring for E’s with his RBI double, and then Mike Michini and Jeremy Villano contributed B2B doubles en route to another 4 runs. The Sliders managed to get 2 back thanks to a trio of singles and a costly error.
The third inning was quiet, and then the teams traded runs in the fourth, setting up an exciting fifth inning. 4 singles and a pivotal double from Kennedy amounted to 5 runs for E’s, and then 5 singles and crucial doubles from Kevin Carver and Oz Dawson added up to 5 runs for the Sliders.
The sixth was another stalemate inning, as E’s got 2 runs on 5 singles, and then the Sliders got their 2 runs thanks to a Jon Beard homer.
Leading by 2 heading into the seventh, E’s was looking for some much-needed insurance runs. They came by way of Mark Kennedy’s 3rd triple of the game, this one driving in 2 runs en route to a 4-run inning. In need of 2 field goals in the bottom of the seventh, the Sliders came up empty, with just 2 singles and no runs.
E’s Irish Pub won the slobber knocker.
Final Score: E’s Irish Pub 20 (2-1) Backdoor Sliders 14 (3-1)
Player of the Game: Mark Kennedy seemed to be in the middle of all the big innings for E’s, going 3 for 5 with 3 doubles, 4 RBIs and 1 Runs Scored.

Game 3 – E’s Irish Pub (2-1) at Maggios (1-0)
E’s needed to catch their breath after the game 1 outburst, an Maggios took advantage. Kevin Walker’s RBI double helped Maggios score 3 in the first and then Brendan McCoy’s 2-run homer contributed to 3 more in the second.
Down 6-0 heading into the fourth, E’s finally settled back down. Jeremy Villano kicked things off with a double, and then 4-straight singles followed, adding up to 4 runs. In the fifth, 2 singles set the table before Mike Michini’s double scored 1 and Villano’s homer scored 3, giving E’s the 8-7 lead.
Looking to pile on some insurance runs, E’s used a big Mark Kennedy triple and a Joe Bernat double to plate 6 more runs, taking the 14-7 lead. Maggios needed a miracle, but apart from Dan Weismoller’s double, they couldn’t get much going.
E’s came from behind and stole their second win of the day.
Final Score: E’s Irish Pub 14 (3-1) Maggios 8 (1-1)
Player of the Game: Jeremy Villano had a big game, going 3 for 4 with a double, homerun, 3 RBIs and 3 Runs Scored.

The Bandits knotted the score at 2 with an RBI double from Nick Ryan before taking a big lead in the third. 5 singles and doubles from Colin Donohoe and Mason Cieri added up to 6 runs, giving their team an 8-2 lead.
The score remained the same until the Bandits piled on a few more thanks to some poor fielding in the sixth, putting them up 11-2. Kyle Greener tripled in the bottom half as the State Reps stole one back.
In the seventh, up 11-3, John Mish and TJ Cieri started things off with B2B doubles, helping to add 2 insurance runs. In the bottom half, looking to come back from 10 down, Furness Brian got things going for the State Reps with a triple. A couple of singles and walks followed, loading the bases…but then 3 straight popups ended the rally.
The Sticky Bandits took advantage of the struggling State Reps and got their first win.

Player of the Game: John Mish went 3 for 3 plus a walk with a double and 2 Runs Scored.
