9.16.18 - B-West Playoffs

Post by tommyC »

B-West Summer Playoffs
After a long, drawn-out summer season (thanks to mother nature), the playoffs had finally arrived.

Game 1 - #5 Sticky Bandits at #5 Legends
The Bandits jumped out to an early lead, plating 4 in the top of the first thanks to Colin Donohoe’s 2-run double. In the second, Sean Hartman and Dom Vanzant chipped in doubles of their own, extending the lead to 6-0.
The Legends finally got on the board in the third, using a trio of singles to score a run, but the Bandits just kept on coming in the fourth. The big hit in the inning was Tom Koelzer’s RBI double. By the time the Legends took their licks in the fourth, they found themselves down 10-1.
But this is when the game got interesting. Haeyden Cruz’ RBI triple helped to score 2 runs for the Legends. After a scoreless fifth for the bandits, the Legends added on 2 more runs, thanks to a pair of triples from Dennis D’Angelo and mark McLaughlin plus a double from Pat Feliciani, cutting the lead to 10-5.
In the sixth, the Bandits used a slew of singles to steal those runs right back…but the Legends offense had woken up. A few singles, a few errors, and a clutch RBI double from Chris Cruz helped cut the deficit to 12-10.
Desperately looking for some insurance runs, the Bandits managed to post 2, thanks to Koelzer’s bomb. This put the higher-seeded Legends down 4 heading into the bottom of the seventh. Dave Anderson kicked things off with a walk, and then Haeyden Cruz doubled before Matt Yoskowitz also walked, loading the bases for Kevin Cruz. He delivered a 2-RBI double, halving the deficit. Two batters later, Pat Feliciani tied the score with his 2-RBI single. He now represented the go-ahead run with just one out in the inning. Jimmy Beumeister and Chris Cruz each did their job, managing to hit safely, loading the bases with still just one out. This is when Mark McLaughlin stepped to the dish and delivered the fourth-straight single, this one scoring the game-winning run in walk-off fashion.
The Legends fought back from 9-down to steal victory from the jaws of defeat.
Final Score: Legends 15 Sticky bandits 14
Player of the Game: Haeyden Crus went 3 for 4 with 2 doubles, a triple, an RBI and 2 Runs Scored.

Game 2 - #6 Spartans at #3 Maggios
2 free passes kicked off the game before Mike Capell delivered an RBI double, helping the Spartans to claim the early 2-0 lead. But in the bottom half, Maggios would score 6 runs on 9 walks, taking the lead and never looking back.
They added 2 more runs in the second as Donny Yanger blasted a 2-run bomb over the fence. In the third, Jared Katz delivered a key RBI single en route to 3 more Maggios runs, extending the lead to 11-2.
The Spartans stole 2 runs back in the fourth, but a pair of solo homers from Jared Katz and Kevin Walker neutralized those in the fifth.
Down 13-4 and pressed for time, the Spartans were looking to rally. Mike Sauler doubled, but that’d be the lone hit in the inning. There would be no come-from-behind fireworks in this one.
Final Score: Maggios 13 Spartans 4
Player of the Game: Jared Katz went 2 for 3 plus 2 walks, a homerun (technically his out was also a homer!), 3 RBIs and 3 Runs Scored.

Game 3 - #4 Legends at #1 Backdoor Sliders
Pat Feliciani kicked off the scoring for the Legends in the top of the first with a solo bomb. In the second, it was Dennis D’Angelo with a solo homer. Then in the third, Feliciani’s 2-run homer and a slew of singles added up to 5 runs, and before anyone knew it, the underdog legends had a 7-0 lead on the division’s top-seeded team.
In the fifth, an RBI double from D’Angelo and an RBI triple from Bryan Fennell extended the Legends lead to 9-0 before the Sliders would finally get on the board in the bottom half va Blasé Contino double and Keith Briggs’ RBI single.
In the sixth, Jimmy Beumeister chipped in an RBI double, adding an insurance run to the Legends tally, putting them up 10-1.
In the bottom of the seventh, the division’s top team was looking for a big-time rally. Things started well enough, as Jon Aiken doubled and then Contino reached on an error. After a fielder’s choice, Keith Briggs knocked in a run with his RBI single. Another out later, Karl D’Abronzo singled to load the bases before Scott Rothman walked, driving in another run. But with two outs and the bases loaded, Nick Enchautegui flied out, stopping the rally dead in its tracks.
Final Score: Legends 10 Backdoor Sliders 3
Player of the Game: Pat Feliciani went 3 for 4 with 2 homeruns, 3 RBIs and 3 Runs Scored.

Game 4 - #3 Maggios at #2 E’s Irish Pub
With one upset in the books, Maggios was attempting to do the same, and they got off to a good start, as just 2 batters into the game, they were up 2-0 thanks to Jared Katz’ 2-run blast. In the second, Donny Yanger doubled and later scored, increasing the Maggios lead to 3-0. Then, in the third inning, Maggios really blew the game opened:
Single, 2-run homer from Brendan McCoy. Single, double from Donny Yanger. Single, double from Drake Spouse. Error, 3-run moon-shot from Jared Katz. When the dust cleared, Maggios had scored 8 more, taking an 11-0 lead in the game.
In the bottom half, E’s finally got on the board as Tom Montuydas and Jeremy Villano both doubled, helping to put 3 up on the board.
But like a top-40 radio station, the hits just kept on coming for Maggios in the fourth. A bunch of singles plus timely doubles from Alex Tamburino, Brendan McCoy and Donny Yanger tacked on 7 more runs, extending Maggios lead to 15.
E’s went down 1-2-3 in the fourth, and Maggios offense actually cooled off in the fifth…but down 15, the pressure was on E’s to score a run in the bottom half or see this one end early. Ground out, strike out looking, and pop-up to the pitcher…1-2-3, that’s how this one would end.
Final Score: Maggios 18 E’s Irish Pub 3
Player of the game: Jared Katz went 3 for 5 with 2 homeruns, 5 RBIs and 3 Runs Scored.

So the top two seeds were eliminated, setting up a championship showdown between #3 Maggios and #4 Legends.
