B North 10/18 and playoff preview

Post by Jmill1734 »

10/18/20

After a positive review or two from the peanut gallery, the playoff preview addition of the write ups is back! First let's take a quick whip around last week's action…

Game 1: Insurance Runs v Dark Horse

Insurance Runs hammered home a run in the 2nd inning on singles, 3 in the 5th on doubles from Dan Miller, Shaner, and a triple from Seth Mattleman, a run in the 6th via another Hanna double and two in the 7th via singles. Dark Horse jumped up big early as they plate 9 over the first two innings highlighted by a Paul Ferruzzi grand slam. They would go on to ice their cake in the 4th and 6th innings as doubles from Bill Jones, Paul Harding and Alex Guarini helped plate two runs in each inning respectively. Dark Horse takes game one and locks up the one seed 14-7. Insurance Runs needed a good policy on player attendance as playing short sunk their normally sturdy ship and they are eliminated.

Game 2: Misfits and Yankee Clippers

The Misfits owned this game from beginning to end. They plate 5 in the first on a Joe Torres dinger, 5 in the 2nd on a Chris Quinn double, 3 in the 4th on a triple from John Persing and a double from Pat Brannell, and capped their day with 7 in the 5th highlighted by a double from Torres and a Joe Tidwell triple. Yankee Clippers only managed 5 in this one as their highlights included a ton of singles and a Nick Manini double in the 3rd. The Misfits cruise 20-5 and both of these solid slugging teams will enter the playoff this week looking for softball glory.

Game 3: One Hit Wonders v Bulldogs

The OHWs smacked home 3 runs over the first two innings on singles. They would follow that up with an 8 run bat around in the 5th highlighted by doubles from Josh Parker and Andy Springer. Capping their scoring for the day was 4 runs in the 7th on a Jesse Grasso triple and a Springer dinger. The Bulldogs hammered home 8 runs in the first two innings by way of singles and doubles from Shawn Dunn and Dave Robbins. They followed that up with 8 more runs over the last three innings highlighted by a triple from Will Overton and a double from Peter Burns. The Bulldogs take this one close and both teams will head into the playoffs swinging hot bats.

Game 4: One Hit Wonders v Balls Deep

Ballz Deep hammered home six runs over the first three innings via singles and a Matt Wass double. They would add another run in the 5th on a Nixon triple, a run in the 6th on an Alex Metz solo bomb and four in the 7th on singles. The Wonders answered with 3 in the first highlighted by a Josh Parker triple. They would add four more in the 3rd on an Andy Springer triple. They would cap their scoring with 3 runs in the 5th on another Parker extra base hit and 4 runs over the final two innings on singles. Final Score: 14-12 Wonders.

Playoff Preview:

Game 1: (4) Bulldogs v (5) Misfits

The Bulldogs come into the playoffs in interesting fashion as some of their historically strong hitters wound up at the bottom of the team statistically. With the deep roster proving to be the staple which helped them to a .500 record this season, they are in position to make a deep run if the big bats in the middle of the order get going. Led by the Daves’ and their high averages (both around 700 respectively) the former champs are a threat to win it all.

The Misfits can beat anyone in SBA when their bats are hot. They always swing it with the best of them and have had huge wins and strange losses this season. Three Hitter Joe Torres has a MONSTER season to pace the offense with 5 homers, 20 RBI, and 16 runs scored. Along with his destruction of the league, was the rest of the team like literally everyone, as 9 members had over 10 hits on the season. If the Misfits can muster a huge offensive day they have a great shot at making a run to championship sunday.

Game 2: (3) One Hit Wonders v (6) Yankee Clippers

One Hit Wonders made a triumphant return to the sunday league after taking off the summer to capture the 3 seed. They are the true definition of a team as 5 members had over 10 RBI, 7 players had over 10 hits, 4 players cranked a homer, and 7 individual players smacked triples. With a lineup built solid across the board and championship experience, they will look to pick up where they left off in 2019 and once again rule as King of the North.

The Yankee Clippers were led by hot hitting Kai Browner who smoked 3 homers and brought in 20 RBI. They are by far the most enigmatic team in B North as they have the propensity to drop 20 runs on anyone at any time and also to occasionally score two. Kai Browner, Nick Wasekanes and Andre O’Donnell each had four doubles as the Clippers will rely on speed and hustle to make their run. If the good Clippers show up, they will no doubt light up the scoreboard and have all the making of a Cinderella story in the playoffs.

Bye: (1) Dark Horse

The reigning, defending national champions of the world defended their title by raking all over Bucks and Montgomery County. Nick Mariana and Ryan Schock had mega seasons, each cranking 4+ homers and bringing in 15+ RBI. Coming in with 44 extra base hits as a team, combined with excellent pitching and a solid defensive unit, Dark Horse is locked, stocked, and ready to rock once again.

Bye (2) Ballz Deep

Ballz Deep was a solid team “wire 2 wire” this season as always. Jason Falcone led the way for the boys in blue and orange cranking the ball to the tune of a .757 average with a homer and 4 doubles. NINE hitters on the team cranked out over ten hits as Ballz Deep snapped for 150 hits on the season. Led by “El Capitan” Geno, Ballz Deep has the depth, defense, and pitching to form one of the most complete lineups in the North. They will once again look to make a run to championship Sunday, where they will no doubt be in the mix to win it all.

Can't wait to see how this shakes out this weekend! Good Luck to everyone, may the hitting be good and beers be cold.
