10.7.18 - B-West

Post by tommyC »

Week two of the fall brought some muddy grounds, but overall the weather cooperated and made for a nice day of softball.

Game 1 – Randazzos at the Expendables
In a week one rematch, Randazzos was hoping for a much better showing, but they started off really slow. It was the Expendables who struck first blood with 2 in the second and then added another in the third thanks to Joe Kindt’s double.
The teams traded triples (Arik Fenton for Randazzos, Bill Larkin for the Expendables) and runs in the fourth before Randazzos finally strung some offense together, plating 2 in the fifth thanks to Harry Steglich’s RBI double.
Pete Corrigan blasted a 2-run homer for Randazzos in the sixth, giving them the 6-4 lead, their first of the day. But the Expendables would immediately tie it in the bottom half thanks to Bill Larkin’s RBi triple.
Looking to take control of the game, Anthony Miller led off the seventh with a triple for Randazzos. He’d score on the next play. Later in the inning, Casey Condron added an RBI double as Randazzos took a 9-6 lead. In the bottom half, the Expendables looked to come back, and even got two men on with just one out, but only managed to score one as the rally fell short.
Final Score: Randazzos 9 The Expendables 7
Player of the Game: Pete Corrigan went 2 for 4 with a homerun, 2 RBIs and 2 Runs Scored.

Game 2 – The Expendables at MaGerks
Frank Turco doubled in the bottom of the first, giving MaGerks the early 2-1 lead. His squad would add to that lead in the second behind Anthony Maddonni’s RBI double, jumping ahead 6-1.
In the third, Pete Donnelly doubled and Joe Kindt tripled for the Expendables, as they narrowed the gap to 6-4 before MaGerks would add 2 back of their own thanks to Denny Nicholson’s triple and Jeff Tongue’s double.
Steve Walker doubled in a run for MaGerks in the fourth and Jeff Tongue doubled in 2 more in the fifth, giving MaGerks a commanding 11-4 lead.
Looking to make their comeback in the sixth, the Expendables strung together some hits, including a 2-run double from Bryan Ren, cutting the deficit to 11-8. But in the seventh, they couldn’t get anything going other than Joe Kindt’s double, and the rally fell short.
Final Score: MaGerks 11 The Expendables 8
Player of the Game: Jeff Tongue went 2 for 3 with 2 doubles and 3 RBIs.

Game 3 – Hambinos at MaGerks
Fireworks started early in this one, as Spencer Slutsky led off the game with a triple for Hambinos and Joe Pizzola later added a double as their team put up a 4-spot. But MaGerks answered right back with 4 of their own as Steve Walker led off with a double and Denny Nicholson later tripled in 2.
MaGerks added 3 runs in the second and the teams traded runs in the third before MaGerks strung together a slew of singles to score 3 more in the fourth, taking an 11-5 lead.
It was a wild fifth, as Tony Stevens doubled for Hambinos, helping them to half the lead with 3 runs. But then in the bottom half, MaGerks offense went crazy, putting up 7. The big hit in the inning was Denny Nicholson’s RBI double.
Looking to rally from 10-down in the seventh, Hambinos went to work. 4 singles, a walk, and an RBI double from Joe Pizzola added up to 4 runs, which is a nice little inning – but not enough when you’re down 10 in the seventh.
Final Score: MaGerks 18 Hambinos 12
Player of the Game: Denny Nicholson went 2 for 4 with a double, triple, 3 RBis and 2 Runs Scored.

Game 4 – Hambinos at Jackhammers
The Hambinos got the offense going in a hurry, as Mark Peasley tripled and Mike Mulvihill doubled, helping to plate 5 runs in the first. For the Jackhammers, Tom Lydon doubled in one of his team’s 2 runs in the bottom half.
The teams traded 3-run innings in the second. Mark Corpora blasted a 2-run homer for Hambinos while Glen Hipple and Rob Wardrop hit B2B doubles for the Jackhammers.
Hambinos won the third as Joe Pizzola doubled in 2 and the Hambinos took the 11-7 lead.
The teams traded runs in the fifth before Hambinos added some crucial insurance runs in the sixth thanks in large part to Tony Stevens’ 2-RBI double.
Heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Jackhammers found themselves down 16-8, so they put on their rally caps. They quickly loaded the bases and 2 runs scored on Vince Morgan’s single, but they could only muster 1 run the rest of the way, falling way short.
Final Score: Hambinos 16 Jackhammers 11
Player of the Game: Joe Pizzola went 4 for 4 plus a walk including a double, 6 RBIs and 2 Runs scored.

Game 5 – Hattricks at Jackhammers
Hattricks used a handful of singles, walks and errors spread across the first three innings to take a 4-0 lead…and had it all erased as the Jackhammers used a pair of doubles from Bill Moore and Rob Wardrop in the bottom of the third to even the score.
Josh Graef homered in the fourth for Hattricks and then Basil Papanicolopoulo doubled in the fifth as his team managed to score 5 more, taking a 10-4 lead.
Jackhammers got one back in the bottom of the fifth, but Hattricks wasn’t done, as they used 4 singles to score 3 more in the sixth.
The score would remain 13-5 until the bottom of the seventh, when the Jackhammers once again tried to turn those caps around and rally. Brian Pestridge did his part, leading off the inning with a double. Jason Cooper, Bill Moore and Glen Hipple would all single in the inning, but in all, they could only manage 2 runs, falling short once again.
Final Score: Hattricks 13 Jackhammers 7
Player of the Game: Basil Papanicolopoulo went 5 for 5 in the game with a double, 4 RBIs and 3 Runs Scored.
