It would take all three games to decide this one.
Slurricanes wasted no time in game putting 2 runs on the board as Brandon Achenbach and Chris Keller both scored. But it was their 2nd inning that really got hot. Brian Kuery singled home 2 runs and Kyle Achenbach doubled home 2 more to cap the 8-run outburst. They added just 2 more runs in the 5th; scoring 12 for the game.
The Pales Ales had very pale bats in game 1. After scoring 3 in the first highlighted by Greg Rufo’s 2-run double, they managed just 1 more run the rest of the way. An anemic offense led to a 12-4, game 1 loss.
Well, Slurricanes’ offense stayed hot. Chris Keeler tripled home a run in the 1st. Then Andrew Smith, Brian Kuery both smashed 2 run shots in the 2nd…Andrew Smith then tripled home a run in the 3rd, Mike Hensel hit a solo shot in the 4th, Matt Perozze singled and scored in the 5th, Chris Keller hit a SF in the 6th to cap a 5-run 6th on way to a team 16-run effort.
Cales came alive in game 2, but also aided by a rough night from the Slurricanes Short stop as committed 3 timely errors. TJ O doubled home 2 in the first, and a steady balance of hits in the 4th led to a 7 run 4th inning. Slurricanes had driven in 5 runs in the 6th to take a late 2 run lead, threatening to sweep the best of 3. But Ales had an answer in the 7th after yet another costly middle infield error allowed the lead off man to reach base. From there, Cale M singled 1 home, Nick D hit a SF and drove in another and Jared D tripled home a run giving Ales a late lead they would not relinquish. Cales survives this game and we headed to a game 3.
Slurricanes AGAIN come out the gate swiging in the 1st. Matt P immediately drives in 2 runs with a single and Kevin S singled home a man capping a 5-run first. But they would struggle offensively until the 6th as a they double their run production with 6 more runs, Matt P again with a key EXB, tripled home a run. Slurricanes scored 12 in the 3rd and decisive game. Was it enough?
Well, it could have been but the Slurricane defense let them down in this game as well. FOUR untimely defensive miscues led to at least 4 Cales runs. This would hurt them. However, Cales did need to hit and they did. Craig M singled home 2 in the first and Mick D tripled and scored with 2 outs after a fielding error. Brennan R reached base on an error and also scored a lone run in the 3rd. Craig M led off the 4th by reaching base on error and quickly scored after the next hitter, TJ O smashed a 2-run shot. Cales went on score 9 runs in the 4th which were capped by back-to-back 2-run doubles by Greg R and Dan D. Cales went on to plate 16 men for the game and take the game by 4.
Remember those 4 miscues leading to at least 4 runs? Yup, the difference in the game.
