Round 1 Playoffs at the Quarry

Post by MikeY »

Game 1: (5) Vertex Pest Management at (4) Outback Steakhouse
Vertex comes out on fire, getting five of their first six batters on base and scoring them all. They’d add another run on a walk and a triple for a 6 run top of the 1st. Outback answers by getting eleven of their first twelve batters on base, scoring 10 of them before making two outs and ending the inning with a 10-6 lead. Vertex comes out swinging again plating four of the first five batters before making an out in the top of the 2nd, and then scoring 4 more on four extra base hits. Outback gets 2 back in the bottom half on a walk, a single, an error, a sac fly and an RBI single. Vertex gets those 2 back in the top of the 3rd, holds Outback scoreless in the bottom half and then gets another run in the top of the 4th to take a 17-12 lead. Outback cuts into that lead in the bottom of the 4th, scoring 4 runs on three straight singles, an RBI double and an RBI single. Outback would then be held scoreless for the 5th and 6th while Vertex would get 3 in the 5th on two doubles and two singles and 4 in the 6th on two doubles, two singles, and two sac flies to take a 24-16 lead after 6. Vertex gets s solo HR by CJ Snyder to lead off the top of the 7th and then 2 more runs on four singles to take a 27-16 lead. Outback would get 4 on two errors, a groundout, and two singles but it wouldn’t be enough and Vertex takes this one 27-20 and moves on to play

Player of the game: Tom Eggito (Vertex) – 5/5 (1B, 2 2B, 2 3B) 3 R, 6 RBI

Game 2: (3) The Commission at (2) Irish Car Bombs
This one starts off quick and is over quick. The Commission gets 5 quick runs in the top of the 1st on a single, an error, a triple, two more singles and another error to take a 5-0 lead. ICB answers with 4 in the bottom half on five singles and a groundout but wouldn’t do a lot else. The Commission would plate 7 more in the 2nd, 2 in the 3rd on a 2 run HR by Kevin Roche, 2 more in the 5th on another 2 run HR by Kevin Roche and 1 run in the 6th on a triple and RBI single. They’d only allow 3 solo HRs by Jared Gardner and Anthony Crawford (both in the 3rd) and Zach Martin (in the 5th). The Commission would get another solo HR by Kevin Roche, a 2 run HR by CJ Motts and 4 more runs in the top of the 7th to take this one 23-8 and move on to the spring championship.

Player of the game: Kevin Roche (Commission) – 5/5 (2B, 3B, 3 HR) 5 R, 7 RBI

Game 3: (5) Vertex Pest Management at (1) Mayhem
Vertex starts off slow after their earlier barrage, only getting a single run across in the first two innings. Mayhem, on the other hand, gets their first eight batters on base, scoring them all in the 1st and then adds another with two outs. They’d get 5 more in the 2nd on three singles and HRs from Mike Bitterlich (his 2nd of the game) and Shane Hanna to take a 14-1 lead. Vertex gets 3 back in the top of the 3rd on two singles, a sac fly and a double. Mayhem gets 2 back in the bottom half on a walk, two singles and a sac fly. Vertes plates 4 in the top of the 4th on two doubles and two singles and a 2 RBI walk (however that works). Mayhem gets a 2 run HR from Mike Bitterlch to get some of those runs back but then Vertex puts up an 8-spot in the top of the 5th to make the score 22-16 in favor of Mayhem. Mayhem would put up another in the bottom of the 5th and 5 more in the 6th while only allowing Vertex to get 3 in the 6th and would take this one 28-19 to move on to the spring championship against The Commission.

Player of the game: Mike Bitterlich (Mayhem) – 5/5 (2B, 3B, 3 HR) 4 R, 5 RBI

Game 4: (3) Hemlock Philosophers at (2) Callahan Auto
The final game of the night would be the playoff game in the National Conference. Hemlock would get s quick 4 runs in the top of the 1st on a double, an error and a 2 run HR by Steve Zajac. They’d add 2 in the 2nd and 3 in the 3rd while holding Callahan scoreless for the first three innings and would hold a 9-0 lead. Callahan gets 6 in the bottom of the 4th on three errors, a sac fly, three singles and a double. Hemlock comes back and scores 9 in the top of the 5th on four singles, three doubles and a 3 run Hr by Jesse Kuiper. Callahan would try and make a comeback by scoring 4 in the bottom half and 5 in the 7th but it wouldn’t be enough and Hemlock takes this one 21-15 to move on to the spring championship next week against The Panthers.

Player of the game: Randy Rongione (Hemlock) – 4/5 (2 1B, 2B, 3B) 3 R, 4 RBI
