Week 6 - August 21st

Game One: Slurricanes v. Mike’s Bar & Grill
Mikes came out of the gate well with a 6-run first inning. The inning was capped with Eddie Haddle’s 2-run triple while Eric Rosenblum drove in 2, earlier in the inning. Mark Kennedy added a 2-run homer in the 6th to score Dennis D’Angelo who doubled just moment earlier. A scoreless 7th kept Mikes at 11 runs for the game.

Slurricanes probably should have lost the game, but 8 defensive errors by Mikes allowed them to hang around. Slurricanes managed 17 hits, all singles but yet pushed 14 across the plate thanks again in part to poor defense. Scoring 14 runs on 17 hits and none of those hits going for extra bases is really something. Chris Keeler & Ant Somma both had 2-run singles in the 7th inning helping Slurricanes take the late lead and the game.

Game Two: Just Food v. Mike’s Bar & Grill
Pourous defense continued in game 2 of Mikes twin bill. This time committing 5 key errors and allowing Just Food to plate 13 runs for the game. Foods did not get on the board until the 4th, when the errors started. Connor O’Keefe tripled home 2, Pete Auteri homered in the 5th and Dave Deniko hit a sac fly in the 6th in route to what seemed another gift game by Mikes.

But the crazy thing with this game was, Mikes actually won the ‘error-war.’ Just Foods returned the favor by committing 7 errors of their own. This allowed Mikes to hang around. Andy M led off the home half of the 7th with Mikes down 2. An error allowed for 2 men on and Eddie H singled home a run. Down just 1 with 2 men on, SOMEHOW Sean P hits a sac fly and not only ties the game, but somehow 2 men come across to score. Sean is credited with the walk-off, 2-run Sac Fly. Mikes takes this error-fest, 14-13.

Game Three: Slurricanes v. Vertex

So, at this point, several things I have concluded with the games which took place this night.
1. The Softball gods were toying around with the fielders.
2. The Quarry infield mix had funny cool-aid flowing out of it causing players to be drunk
3. Fielders were fielding balls with bare hands.
4. Scorekeeper was really tough this night

Slurricanes went on to score 13 runs in the 2nd game of their double header, but Vertex helped them with SEVEN errors. Let’s give credit however to Tyler F who went 4-4 with 3 singles, a triple, 3 runs scored and 3 rbi. Chris K also drove in 3 and and Brian K doubled twice.

Slurricanes played much better defensively, but not enough to quiet the Vertex offense. Chris Beatty scored 4 times, Matt Crowell drove in 3 runs, Justin Miller was 4-4 with 2 doubles, a triple and 2 ribbies, Matt Schaub doubled and tripled, Tom Egitto scored 3 times, and Frank Staber drove in 2. Vertex scored 17 and took the game despite defensive issues.

Game Four: Cale’s Pale Ales v. Beers

Both teams played the night-cap short handed. A traditional baseball game, 9 on 9. Brennan Rudnick had himself a night for Cale’s going 4-4 with 2 singles, a double, triple, 3 runs scored and an rbi. TJ Ohtrup drove in 4 and John Pileggi scored twice. But outside of those 3 men, the offense was stagnant…scoring just 7 times.

Beers however came to hit. Lead-off man, Ryan Maley went 4-5 and missed the cycle by a single. Yes, all hits were for extra bases and he never stopped at first. His line for the night included 2 doubles, 2 home runs, 5 rbi. He also scored 4 times. Ryan Calabros also smashed a 2-run shot in the 1st and Matt Kane also homered in the 3rd. Beers went on to score 17 and won this game easily.
