Calling time while a game is in progress is somewhat of a misnomer. A player, coach, or manager cannot call time, they can only request that they be granted time. The only person in the game that can call time is the umpire. The next time you holler out, time, remember you are only asking for time. You will get time only when it is granted to you by the umpire. The umpire can/will grant time if, and only if, in his/her judgment play has ceased. Until such time, the ball is live and game action can continue.
