Stephanie Farrar (Team 3) is a post draft defection. There are no female eddies on the alternate list. If you are a female and would like a chance to get into the 1-pitch, sign up as an alternate ASAP.
John Erb is incapacitated at the moment. His ability to attend the 1-pitch tournament is uncertain. If John cannot make it, Dave Ulmer, Shane Hanna, and Jose Rodriguez will enter a lottery for the vacant spot on Team 9.

Re: Marsh Family 1-Pitch 2018 Tournament Teams / Consensus
From the FWIW department...
Teams 1 and 4 have opted to go with the bare bones minimum of 2 females. Risky move. Should one of those females get hurt or have to leave the tourney, the team will be taking a batting out. Teams 8 and 9 have 4 eddies. A trade for one of the extra eddies might be good insurance.
Team 5 has chosen to go the family route with a father/son, father/daughter, and 2 husband/wife couples.
The first pick in the draft was Jarred Gardner. The first male eddie pick was Ron Bannister. The first female eddie pick was Linda Dart.
There was quite a bit of depth in this draft. Some great talent was had as low as the 7th round and beyond.
If you're looking for a prediction from me, Team 10 can't lose. Actually, you don't want my prediction. It's the 1-pitch kiss of death. I am 0 for forever. If I pick your team, you have a better chance of hitting the Powerball lottery than winning the 1-pitch tourney.

Alternate Mare Wade (fe) will replace Stephanie Farrar (fe) on Team 3. Ms. Farrar will no longer be welcome to play in any Softball America tournament due to the manner in which she pulled out of the tournament. An email or phone call would have been the right thing to do.

Re: Marsh Family 1-Pitch 2018 Tournament Teams / Consensus
The Erb situation has been resolved. John will play this weekend.
The 1-pitch drama has ended, at least for the time being. Mother Nature has backed off a bit as far as the rain is concerned. The forecast is for 82 with clouds. It will be humid and feel like 92. Plan to keep hydrated. We've had more than a few people go down with dehydration in the past and it's not a fun experience.
I'm looking forward to a fun day for a good cause. Bernie was at the draft this past Sunday. He's putting some weight back on and seemed in good spirits. He gets choked up when he thinks about all that we're doing on his behalf. Heart warming.
Without Steph Garrett and Tim O'Shea in attendance to manage the trash situation, it is imperative we all do our part in keeping the ball field grounds clean. Please make sure your trash gets into one of the trash receptacles at the field. It's never a good idea to defecate where you dine.

Re: Marsh Family 1-Pitch 2018 Tournament Teams / Consensus
It was suggested we put a HR limit of 2 per game, per team for the 1-pitch tourney. Any team that hits a HR beyond that limit must cough up a charity $10.00 for each dinger over the limit. I understand this is done at a lot of charity tournaments. I think it's a cool idea, but I'm not the one that has to come up with the sawbuck. If you like the idea, let me know and we will implement it.
This was only a suggestion. Seems it did not go over well. No biggie. Not implemented.

Ron Pulli is indisposed and can no longer attend the tournament. The alternates listed below are comparable replacements for Ron. Each alternate's 3 digit number is listed next to their name.
Using the last 3 digits of the official attendance of tonight's Phillies/Nationals game and comparing that to each alternate's 3-digit number, a replacement for Ron Pulli will be determined. The alternate with the 3-digit number that is closest to the last 3 digits of the game's attendance (plus/minus) will be placed on Team #9. 000 will follow 999.
Shane Hanna - 123
Dave Ulmer - 215
Jose Rodriguez - 265

I'm sad to say Rich Edmundson will not be taking tourney pictures this time around. He has not been feeling well and doesn't quite have the strength to take the job on right now. Nobody is more disappointed about it than he is. Get well soon, Rich.

If anyone wants to bring along a digital camera, I'd be happy to step in and take some action photos. They won't be Rich caliber, but they will be photos.

Game attendance: 22,525 Last 3 digits: 525
Closest to that number (plus/minus): Jose Rodriguez
Mo will take Ron Pulli's spot on Team 9.

Ron Zaberer can no longer attend the tournament. With only 1 marginally comparable alternate, Joe Frederick will take Ron's place on Team 6.

Dave Shannon (Team 5) can no longer attend the tournament. One of the alternates listed below will take Dave's spot on Team 5. Each alternate's 3 digit number is listed next to their name.
Using the last 3 digits of the official attendance of this afternoon's Brewer/Reds game and comparing that to each alternate's 3-digit number, a replacement for Dave Shannon will be determined. The alternate with the 3-digit number that is closest to the last 3 digits of the game's attendance (plus/minus) will be placed on Team #9. 000 will follow 999.
Shane Hanna - 123
Dave Ulmer - 215
I don't want to hear anymore 'it's not fair' crap. If you don't like it, tough. You and or your team are welcome to pull out of the tournament.

Re: Marsh Family 1-Pitch 2018 Tournament Teams / Consensus
I know a lot of people have trouble grasping this lottery format. It works much like a clock. When the hands pass 12 the numbers reset to 1. If you picked #9 and someone else picked #2 and the number was 12, on the surface it would appear 9 is closer to 12 than 2, but that is not the case here. The person who picked #2 would be 2 away from 12 while the person that picked #9 would be 3 away from 12. The person who picked #2 would be closer.
If the last 3 numbers of the today's attendance is 669, it would be a tie. Each alternate would be exactly 454 away. (669-215=454) (1000-669=331+123=454). An attendance number between 123 and 215 would be a simple case of subtraction unless, of course, the attendance number was 169 which would place each alternate exactly 46 away. If a tie should occur, we will do it again using one of tonight's MLB games.

Why not just do it in order? Dave should be on team 6, and Shane to team 5. Joe shouldn’t have jumped both of them.

It is done this way in order to prevent unscrupulous managers from using the next-up alternate to their advantage post draft. In almost every prior case, post draft defections have been filled using the lottery method. With all due respect to Ron Zaberer, Dave Ulmer is a much better ball player and nowhere near an 11th round pick. Placing him on Team 6 would be extremely unfair to the other 8 teams in the tourney. They would cry foul and have every right to do so.

Re: Marsh Family 1-Pitch 2018 Tournament Teams / Consensus
One has to think like a criminal to either catch a criminal or prevent a crime. Here's an example...
Sitting as first alternate is one of the league's best female eddies. Post draft, an unscrupulous manager sees this female alternate just sitting there for the taking. He or she decides to persuade his weakest female eddie (11th round pick) to pull out of the tournament. The manager may even offer a few bucks to help pay for a trip down the shore that weekend just so he or she can get to that female alternate. Now the team just picked up a lot of ability in exchange for a liability. That is what you call an unscrupulous manipulation. And don't for 1 second think it couldn't or wouldn't happen. My job is to prevent that from happening.

Re: Marsh Family 1-Pitch 2018 Tournament Teams / Consensus
I searched the old board and managed to find the tournament protocol as it relates to alternates.
Alternates
Any players not on the draft list (late entrants, or entrants beyond the limit) will be placed into an alternate player pool. If, at any point before the draft takes place, a player gets hurt or cannot attend the tournament, replacement players (alternates) will be assigned to the body of the draft according to their player status (male/female eddie, core) and in the order with which they signed up to play. If, at any point after the draft but before the tournament begins, a drafted roster player gets hurt or cannot attend the tournament, alternates will be assigned on a relatively random basis. Should a team need a replacement player after the draft is complete, a list of comparable players to the player being replaced will be formed and posted along with their 3-digit numbers. This list may contain players of marginally greater/lesser skills than the originally drafted player(s). Using the last 3 digits of the official attendance of a MLB game and comparing that to the alternate's 3-digit number, a replacement player will be determined. The alternate with the 3-digit number that comes closest to the last 3 digits of that game's attendance (+/-), will be assigned to that team. 000 will follow 999. Once tournament day arrives, all rosters are frozen and substitutions of any kind are strictly prohibited.
