B North Championship

Ballz Deep v One Hit Wonders… the greatest rivalry of teams in any of the B divisions in Softball America. Both teams hammered their way to top seeds and both snagged a 1 run victory in the regular season… who would pull it out today? Would the winner move up to the A league? Will momentum carry over to a successful fall? All questions to be answered… Let’s take a look and see how this played out.

Game 1:

The One Hit Wonders get on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the first via a Jesse Grasso double, a walk and two sac flies. Ballz Deep answered quickly as walks and singles plate two in the top of the 2nd to knot the score Both teams would plate a run in the 3rd inning as ageless wonder Mark Bernacki crushed a triple and scored for Ballz Deep whereas singles plate a run for the Wonders. Jacob McDevitt put the Ball boys ahead in the top of the 4th with a solo dinger but the Wonders would answer once again with a Paul Ferruzzi solo shot to knot the score and singles plating an additional run putting them ahead by one. SIngles, walks and a Bernacki attempt at a double helped Ballz Deep to 4 huge runs to take a 3 run lead in the top of the 5th. One Hit Wonders would not be down for long though, as singles and a Bill “the thrill” Jones double plate 5, putting them back up two in this seesaw battle. Tom Campbell rallied the troops in the 6th as he leads off with a triple, and a steady stream of singles help push across 5 runs to once again but the Ballz Deepers in the lead. Jesse Grasso answered a triple and run with a triple and run but that was all the Wonders could muster in the bottom of the 6th so we head to the 7th with Ballz Deep up two. In the 7th, Jacob McDevitt, made a power move and with BDE he cranked a 3 run homer to put the Ball boys up for good as once again the Wonders could only muster a single run on a Grasso double, giving Ballz Deep a huge game 1 win.

Game 2:

For the One Hit Wonders, with their backs against the wall, Jack Stepnowski stepped up to start game 2 with an RBI double two put the OHWs up 2 in the top of the first. Ballz Deep knotted the score in the bottom half of the inning by way of singles. After a quiet 2nd inning, the Wonders plate a monster 5 runs on 6 singles to take a 7-2 lead. In such a tightly contested series no lead is safe as the Ballz Deepers crank home 4 runs of their own by way of singles and an RJ Kahler two bagger to cut the deficit. Both teams would get back on the scoreboard in the 5th inning as four singles apiece scored two runs for each. In the bottom of the 7th, down a run, Jake McDevitt was big man on campus as he smoked an RBI double to knot the score for Ballz Deep and would score two batters later as 10 year veteran and highly regarded Bristol native Curt Hensman lofted a single, bringing in the game and championship winning run.

Congrats Ballz Deep on winning the Summer Championship. As there will not be any movement up to A, it will be a pleasure to see both of these titans run it back in the fall and try to defend their legacies against returners such as the Insurance Runs, the Yankee Clippers, Amber Inn, the Misfits, and Team Dark Horse.
