League Records

Post by sixofdiamonds »

Once again, a long-standing seasonal league record is on the verge of collapse.

After 7 games and 21 at-bats in the Tuesday Men's league, Matt Schaub (King's Corner) has 19 hits and is batting 905. Matt needs 3 at-bats to qualify (24) and nothing less than a 3 for 3 perfect day at the plate to break the 18-year old men's league seasonal batting average record of 903 set by Frank Hackett during the Tuesday Men's fall season of 2003. Matt is slated to play this coming Saturday morning vs. Just Food at the Quarry, 9:00 am. Good luck, Matt!

And yet one more seasonal record gets a new owner. Ryan Maley just raised the bar on the runs-scored record, crossing the plate 28 times in one season. That eclipses the old mark of 27 set by Joe Robinson (2003), Matt Schaub (2012), and Eric Beatty (2017). Nice job, Ryan!

Ryan also had 29 hits, which put him right on the doorstep of the seasonal hits record. According to Ryan, had he been aware he was that close to the hits record, he may have reconsidered accepting the 2 bases on balls he was issued.

With all these high seasonal numbers, there's a good chance a few yearly records may fall this year. You can check out yearly records here...

And yet again, a long-standing seasonal league record is on the verge of collapse.

After 7 games and 23 at-bats in the Sunday Men's league, Paul Ferruzzi, Jr. (Dark Horse, B North) has 21 hits in 23 at-bats and is batting 913. Paul needs 1 at-bat to qualify (24) and nothing less than a perfect day at the plate to break the 18-year old men's league seasonal batting average record of 903 set by Frank Hackett during the Tuesday Men's fall season of 2003. Paul is slated to play this coming Sunday morning vs. Wire2Wire Sports Podcast at Lukens 1, 1:00 pm. Good luck, Paul!

With the Sunday Men's rainout last Sunday, Paul will resume his effort to supplant Frank Hackett for the men's league batting average record this coming Sunday. Good luck, Paul.

Meantime, flying under the statistical radar, Kris Pulli quietly shattered the coed league single season base on balls record of 14 set by Shannon Falcone way back in 2004. Kris managed a whopping 16 free passes in 26 plate appearances in the Sunday Afternoon Coed league. A big-time congrats to you, Kris Pulli!

Brandon Birkhead of the Lung Darts, Wednesday Coed, needs 3 home runs over the fence in the 6:30 game at the Quarry this Wednesday in order to tie Jarred Gardners 2006 and 2014 record of 12 all at the Quarry in one session! Definitely going to be there watching this one.

Brandon Birkhead broke the coed single season HR record by hitting his 13th dinger of the season at the Quarry last night. The old mark was set back in the Wednesday Coed spring league of 2006 by Jarred Gardner. Some wondered, myself included, if the original record was set with games played strictly at the Quarry. Well, the answer to that is right here. Jarred played for Maple Glen Tavern at the time and one of the games was played at the short-porched School Road ball field.

Congrats to Brandon Birkhead on raising the bar. You are a beast!

I did not immediately realize Jarred set the HR mark in 2006 and also in 2014. In 2014 Jarred played for the Renegades and hit 12 HRs with every one of them clearing the Quarry fence. In fairness to both players, 2 records will stand. One will be the overall seasonal HR total and the other will be seasonal HR total at the Quarry.

But if Birk has 13, all of them at the Quarry, wouldn't he hold both records?

Pat Kelley tied/broke the coed single season HR record by hitting his 13th dinger of the season (all Quarry) this past Monday. Pat tied the record set only 2 weeks prior by Brandon Birkhead (10 Quarry, 3 Hatfield) and eclipsed the 16 year old mark of HRs hit strictly at the Quarry (12). Nice job, Pat!

It's been brought to my attention the aforementioned record of 13 coed single season Quarry HRs is not accurate. After some due diligence I found that Pay Kelley did play 1 game at Hatfield and did, in fact, hit 2 over the Hatfield fence. I stand corrected.

Pat Kelley's HR record of 13 will stand next to Brandon Birkhead's record of 13. Both will stand along side Jarred Gardner's 12, all at the Quarry.

The seasonal records onslaught continues. Brandon Birkhead has raised the bar on the coed single season hits total to 31, surpassing the previous mark of 30 set by 4 players-- by Jarred Gardner (2006), Paul Loveland (2006), Vince Lehr (2011), and Keith Keppley (2011). In doing so, Brandon also smashed the 16-year old single season slugging mark of 2360 set by Jarred Gardner in 2006. Mr. Birkhead slugged a whopping 2382. These feats were accomplished in the Friday Coed league fall season of 2022.

With 7 men's league games left to play, Brandon has a pretty good shot at breaking the 8-year old yearly men's league mark of 59 HRs set by Brian Penecale in 2014. We will have to keep an eye on this.

UPDATE:

Brandon hit 3 dingers last night which ties the yearly HR record of 59. With 4 games left, 1 tonight, 1 next Thursday and 2 this Sunday he needs to hit one more to bust a record set 8 years ago by one of the league's most prolific hitters in Brian Penecale. That says a lot for 'The Birksmith'.

New league record. Brandon Birkhead - 60 men's league HRs in a year and still counting with 3 games left. Congrats, Birky!

Ari Silverstein (Muckdogs) put on a batting display last night hitting 5 HRs over the Quarry fence in his 1st 5 ABs. 5 over in a single game ties the record. In his 6th AB Ari could only single. Not too shabby: 6/6, 5 dingers, 15 ribbies.

Sean Nonemacher (Tuesday Men's/Kings Corner) is on the doorstep of either tying or breaking 4 seasonal records. Sean currently has 34 ABs. With 1 game left he needs 6 to tie the record. While not likely, it is certainly possible. With 26 Hits, Sean will need to go 5 for 5 next Tuesday in order to tie the Hits mark. Sean has crossed the plate 24 times this Tuesday Men's spring season. He needs to cross the plate 4 times in his Week 8 game to tie the Runs record. Finally and most realistically, Sean needs only 1 2B to tie a 23-year old record of 14 set by John Proietto way back in Y2K. Two 2-baggers gives him sole possession of the seasonal Doubles record.

Good luck, Nonny!

Well, Nonny, as he is known to many, didn't completely accomplish his lofty goals, but he did manage to tie the doubles record. He got kind of robbed in his last at-bat with a sinking line drive to right center that was caught on a nice play by the right center fielder.
