Labor Day 1-Pitch Tournament / Fall 2023

Post by sixofdiamonds »

Player registration now open and underway. Click here to register...
https://www.cuttingedgesports.net/sbare ... pitch.html

Date: Sunday, September 3, 2023
Rain Date: A rain date shall not be scheduled. If the tourney cannot be played on September 3rd, it will not be played.

1st Game: 9:00 am (all games to be played at the Eureka Quarry Field)

Please note: This tournament is a metal bat affair. Core, all-stars, male and female eddies may use any bat as set forth by Softball America’s regular season bat restriction policy.

Please DO NOT register for this tournament unless you are reasonably certain you will be able to attend. If, after registering for the tourney, you find you cannot attend, please be considerate enough to manager tandems and those on the alternate list to notify the league office as soon as humanly possible.

Cost: $15.00/player (2 games guaranteed)

This is a 1-day coed softball event. Eight teams will be formed entirely through a draft system based on individual player statistics. The 8 teams will then compete for the 1-pitch title. Each batter receives 1 pitch. If the pitch is fouled off, swung at and missed, or hits the mat behind home plate, the batter is struck out. If the pitch is a ball, the batter walks. The rest of the game is played in normal fashion. Winning teams will receive their choice of custom jackets or sweatshirts. Plaques and/or trophies will be awarded to the winning managers and tournament MVP's.

This is a great day of softball, fun, food and drink-- kind of like one big picnic where a softball game breaks out every 50 minutes. It's also a great way to meet other Softball America league members. Bring chairs, tents, coolers, and whatever else to make yourself comfortable. Make a day of it or come and go as you please.

Members will be listed in the body of the draft on a first come, first served basis. Entrants must be, or have been, a registered member of Softball America at some point in the past 26 years.*

*Due to the lack of female league member participation over the last few tournaments, female outsiders WILL be permitted to enter the tournament.

Along with 8 manager tandems (16 players), an additional 88 players can register to be drafted. Total players 104. The minimum number of eddie draft candidates - 32 (24 female, 8 male)

Tournament play will follow ASA and SBA league rules with the following exceptions...

1. Each tandem will draft no less than 2 females BEFORE the 7th round.
2. Core/eddie walk rule WILL be observed. If a male player is walked with a female eddie behind him, the male player will be placed on 2B (credited with a base on balls) and the female eddie will bat. Unlike our league rule which needs 2 outs in the 5th, 6th, or 7th inning for the rule to kick in, this rule is in effect through the entire game.
3. 2nd foul ball courtesy for eddies will not be observed.
4. A 3-3-2 eddie rule will apply for this tournament - 3 eddies must be in the line-up, 3 eddies must play the field, 2 of the eddies in the line-up and field must be female.
5. All roster players must be in the batting line-up.
6. Batting line-ups must consist of 2 female eddies alternating with a male batter (core or male eddie) in the first 4 batting slots.

Please know it is entirely possible you could be drafted to a tandem or end up on a team with people you don't like. If that is something you won't be able to deal with, please don't sign up. And please don't be one of those people that signs up, gets on a team you don't like then makes an excuse to bail out. Remember, this is softball. It's all about having fun and nothing more.

The player draft will be held Sunday, August 27, 7:00 pm at the Quarry snack stand. Should inclement weather postpone the draft, we will run it on Monday, 6 pm at the Quarry.

Re: Labor Day 1-Pitch Tournament / Fall 2023

Female interest in slow pitch softball continues to wane. This trend is not only local, but very much on a national level. With such limited female interest, I decided to open the female 1-pitch spots to whomever wanted to come on board. There were only 21 girls available to draft at the time I made this decision. Of course, right after I decide to allow others to enter, 3 more girls sign up and they have been placed on the alternate list. It is what it is. The latest update on 1-pitch draft candidates is now posted.

Beginning in 2024, all 1-pitch tournaments will move from a 'coed' format to an 'open' format. Much like the Wednesday Open league, the Memorial Day and Labor Day 1-pitch tournaments will be considered men's tournaments where women can play if they want to. Managing tandems will consist or any combination of players other than all-star/all-star. The girls will be allowed to use the same bats as they use in the coed leagues, but as far as other advantages like the eddie walk rule, eddie markers in the outfield, bunting, etc. are concerned, they will be off the table. I've tried so hard to make softball more palatable for the girls, but it just doesn't seem to have any impact. Once again, it is what it is.

For the upcoming Labor Day 1-pitch tourney, 3 teams will have 2 girls and 5 teams will have 3 girls. The 3-3-2 requirement (3 eddies must be in the line-up, 3 eddies must play the field, 2 of the eddies in the line-up and field must be female) will remain in effect as will current female eddie advantages. Managers can choose to draft 3 girls to guard against injury or player defection or they can choose to go with the bare bones minimum of 2 girls. With 2 girls, if a girl gets injured or has to leave the tourney, the team would normally be forced to take a batting out at the end of the line-up. To make things a little less invasive on the team should this happen, the penalty for batting only 1 girl will not be a batting out. Rather, the team will be forced to play the field with only 9. Hopefully that does not happen.

Managers will draft 2 girls before the 7th inning. Correction: 1 girl before the 4th inning round. Only one of the girls will be required to bat in the 1st or 2nd spot in the line-up.

Nicole McLaughlin has replaced Katie O'Toole in the body of the draft. I mistakenly placed Katie ahead of Nicole on the alternate list. My apologies to both Katie and Nicole.
