Balls Deep Versus The Swingers
GAME 1

In a best of 3 series, Swingers take the field first as the home team to get this started. In the top of the first Balls Deep strikes early with a leadoff single from Trevor Harris followed by an RBI triple from Tim Frei. After a lineout by Tim Gluck, Nick Carl hits an RBI single to take a 2-0 lead. The Swingers are able to get one back after a leadoff walk from Matt Close. They almost fail to capitalize, but with two outs Dale Loover is able to knock Matt Close in. In the second Balls deep starts with a single from Casey Condron, followed by a Fielders Choice where Condron and Benner swap places before a walk by Jayden Hurrey and RBI single off the bat of Josh Carl. In the bottom of the second The Swingers go down in order and Balls Deep carries a 3-1 lead into the third. In the top of the third Balls Deep manages only a single off the bat of Tim Gluck before The Swingers get their opportunity. The Swingers start off with a fly ball to left but then Kevin Weintraub hits a double followed by an RBI single from Lucas and then a walk from Nick McClay. Matt Close steps up and hits a 3 run Home Run to take their first lead and then Brian Close follows with a triple and Chris Clewell bats him in with an RBI double of his own. Scoring 5 in the bottom of the 3rd, The Swingers take the lead 5-3. To start the fourth, Will Schulz leads off with a triple and scores when Casey Condron reaches base on an error. Derek Benner proceeds to knock him win with an RBI double. Jayden Hurrey and Josh Carl draw walks and Matt Crane knocks in 1 with an RBI single. Trevor Harris knocks another in with an RBI single keeping the bases loaded for Tim Frei. Tim Frei hits a grand slam to retake the lead. Tim Gluck keeps the inning going with a double before the 9th batter of the inning for Balls Deep finally records the first out. A sac Fly to score one run leads to the second, but then Will Schulz gets his second hit of the inning, a single, before Balls Deep records their third out, scoring 9 runs in the top of the 4th. In the bottom of the 4th The Swingers do some damage control with a single from Matt Bachmann and Home Run from Dion Green to bring in two, with two outs. After 4, Balls Deep leads 12-8. In the fifth Balls Deep starts the inning with a walk and gets two runners on, but strands them both and are left scoreless. The Swingers capitalize on the scoreless inning with a leadoff single from Lucas before Nick McClay swaps places with him on a fielders choice. Matt Close hits a single and then Colin Kelly hits a two run double, immediately followed by Brian Close’s 2 run Home Run. Swingers score 4 in the inning to tie us up going into the top of the sixth. Balls Deep leads off the top of the sixth with a solo shot off the bat of Tim Frei, his second of the day and 6th RBI of the game, but fly out three batters in a row and score only one in the inning. The swingers lead off with a triple from Zach Nikander, a single from Ben Razzi, and an RBI double from Matt Bachman. Dion Greene scores the second with a sac fly and The Swingers get three in the bottom of the sixth to retake the lead again, 15-13. In the top of the seventh, down by 2, Will Schulz gets them started with a single and with aggressive baserunning and an error by the third baseman, manages to get extra bases. Casey Condron comes up as the tying run but flies out to left before Derek Benner drives Will Schulz in on a ground out. With no runners on and down by 1, Jayden Hurrey steps up and hits a ground ball to short and is unable to reach.

Swingers win Game 1 15-14

GAME 2
Switching sides, The Swingers start things off in the top of the first, up 1-0 in the series. Matt Close wastes no time with a solo Home Run and The Swingers take an early 1-0 lead. Balls Deep answers back with a double from Trevor Harris, followed by a double from Tim Frei, then another double from Tim Gluck, before Nick Carl hits a two run Home Run. Balls Deep scores 4 runs with their first four batters before ending the inning and take an early 4-1 lead. Swingers come out in the second and, after a fly out from Brian Hoover, Zach Nickander hits a single, Matt Bachman singles, and Dion Greene reaches on an error, scoring Zach Nickander and Matt Bachman. Ben Razzi has an RBI single to knock in Dion Greene. Swingers tie it in the top of the second and then are able to hold Balls Deep scoreless in the bottom of the inning after a leadoff single from Derek Benner. In the top of the third Matt Close has a double before Colin Kelly hits a 2 run Home Run. Brian Close gets on with a single and Chris Clewell hits another two run Home Run. Swingers score 4 in the inning and take the lead. Tim Frei gets one back for Balls Deep after a double and error scores him but Balls Deep can’t muster anything else and Casey Condron has a huge mental error and is ejected from the game, costing his team a player and a team out. Capitalizing on the momentum swing, The Swingers start with a single from Zach Nickander and throwing error to advance him before a single from Kevin Weintraub and Sac Fly from Matt Backmann. Dion Green singles as well before Lucas knocks him in with an RBI double. Swingers extend the lead to 11-5. In the bottom of the 4th, Derek Bener starts off with a single but Jayden Hurrey hits into a fielders choice to replace him on the bags. Josh Carl hits a single and then Trevor Harris gets an RBI single. Tim Frei hits a sac fly and Balls Deep adds two more to bring it to 11-7 Swingers. Top of the fifth starts with a Matt Close double before Brian Close hits him in with a double of his own. Dale Hoover knocks him in with an RBI single and Swingers extend the lead to 13-7. The bottom of the fifth goes in order for Balls Deep, with three fly outs to the outfield. In the top of the 6th Zach Nickander starts off with a single, Kevin Weintraub follows him with a single, and Matt Bachman hits a 3-run home run. Ben Razzi gets a single of his own and advances on an error and Lucas reaches on an error as well. Nick McClay knocks in Ben with a Sac Fly and then Matt Close knocks in Lucas with an RBI double. Swingers extend the lead to 18-7. The bottom of the sixth starts with an automatic out from Condron’s ejection before Derek Benner reaches on a single and advances on an error. Jayden Hurrey reaches on a fielder’s choice, but then Josh Carl and Matt Crane both go down on strikes to end the inning. Brian Close starts the top of the seventh with a single, but Swingers can’t pad the lead and we go into the bottom of the seventh with The Swingers up 18-7. Balls Deep begins their comeback attempt with singles from both Trevor Harris and Tim Frei before Tim Gluck hits a 3-run Home Run. The Balls Deep attempt falls short though, and The Swingers celebrate their Summer B East Men’s Championship.


The Swingers win Game 2 18-10

Player of the Series: Matt Close, 6-6, 1 single, 3 doubles, 2 Home Runs, 5 RBI’s, 6 runs scored.

As the leadoff batter, Matt started both games by scoring in the first inning. In addition to batting 1.000, he led off an inning three times in the series and scored on all three at bats. In his only at bat with runners in scoring position he hit a 3 Run Home Run. Matt was the sparkplug to the offense for this championship series for the Swingers.
