B East Season Opener 4/10/2022

Post by ntodd71 »

Despite the heavy rain on Thursday and scattered showers on Saturday, SBA commissioner/local weatherman, Les Greenstein, decided enough was enough and it was time to play ball!

Dave and Confused vs. Palz Tap House

We start the 2022 season off at Hatfield where the grizzled veteran laden Dave and Confused took on Palz Tap House. DC plates two in the first off of singles, a vintage Carl Ervin walk, and a sacrifice fly by Bryon McMackin. Not to be outdone, Palz puts up two of their own off of four singles and two walks. Both teams were quiet in the second inning with no runs to show for either squad. The levees broke open for DC in the third however, as they batted around and plated nine off of a pair of walks, singles, five doubles by Dave Graves, Carl Ervin, Mark McKinney, Bryon McMackin, and Kevin Noone. Palz plated three more to cut the deficit to six at the bottom of the inning by a Louie Knoeble home run. In the top of the fourth, DC plated four more with an error, single, three more doubles, and a triple by Kyle Pederzani. Palz scored two more via error, single and a double by Kyle Greener. DC tacked on one more run in the fifth and blanked in the sixth, while Palz only had one more run in the chamber via a Peter Herbert solo shot in the bottom of the sixth. Dave and Confused start out strong, taking down Palz Tap House 16-8.

Player of the Game: Dave and Confused’s 2-5 hitters. Kyle Pederzani, Carl Ervin, Mark McKinney, and Bryon McMackin combined to go a blistering 9/11 with 9 runs scored, five doubles, and a triple.

Sunday Scaries vs. Purple Cobras

(Editor’s Note: during the season previews, I completely missed the Dodgeball reference with the Purple Cobras team name. Ouchtown, population: me, bro.)

Sunday Scaries came into this one looking for an easy matchup against the newcomer Purple Cobras. Unfortunately, they got hit hard early, as PC put up six runs in the 1st off of five walks and four singles. SS countered with two runs of their own at the bottom of the inning, thanks to RBI doubles by Matt Horn and John Persing. Quiet innings for both in the second, as the only run to score was an RBI single by Colin Kelly. PC added three runs in the top of the 3rd thanks to RBI singles from Cody “Road” Runner and Dan Roman. SS put up a goose egg making it 9-3 after the 3rd. Not content with going away quietly, momentum swung with PC getting shut out at the top of the 4th. SS throws up a six spot in the bottom thanks in part to seven singles and a two run RBI double by Bobby Scholly. With it all tied up at 9 going into the 5th, neither team could muster a run to take the lead. PC put up one in the top of the 6th, courtesy of a sac fly by Kenny Croak. SS responded with five runs at the bottom courtesy of walks, doubles, and an RBI triple by Kris Karaba. PC took a one run lead after the top of the 7th, scoring five thanks to three walks, three singles, and a two RBI triple by “Road” Runner himself. Needing two to win, one to tie in the bottom of the 7th, Patrick Deacon hit a lead-off double to get a runner in scoring position. Unfortunately for SS, all they could muster was a single to knock him in, with Sunday Scaries tying Purple Cobras to start the year, 15 all.

Player of the Game: Cody “Road” Runner. Runner went 3-4 with a walk, two singles, a triple, 3 RBI, and 2 runs scored in the tie.

Purple Cobras vs. Yankee Clippers

Looking to get the taste of a tied softball game out of their mouths, the Purple Cobras plate 12 across the first 3 innings against the Yankee Clippers, led by two doubles and a triple by Cody “Road” Runner, six walks, and five singles. YC put up 6 across the first 3, thanks to scattered singles, walks, doubles by Tom Finn, Lonnie Snyder, and Terry Heller, and a triple by Kai Browner. YC managed to keep PC off the scoresheets in the 4th, and added two thanks to an Eric Rohrback single and Lonnie Snyder sac fly. The Clippers cut the PC lead to one in the top of the 5th inning, thanks to singles, and RBIs by Rich Brazukas, Andre O’Donnell, and an RBI triple by Terry Heller. PC put up two more in the bottom of the 5th to extend their lead back to four, led by a pair of doubles from Corey Larwa and Dan Roman, and a single by Runner. The Clippers can only muster one more run between the 6th and 7th innings, while PC tacked on two more insurance runs in the bottom of the 6th. The Yankee Clippers forgot the five Ds of dodgeball, falling to the Purple Cobras, 17-12.

Player of the Game: Cody “Road” Runner. Runner tore the cover off the ball in this one, going 5-5 with two singles, two doubles, a triple, 5 RBI and 4 runs scored.

Yankee Clippers vs. Cifelli Sunoco

Looking to get one in the win column after shaking off the rust in game one, the Yankee Clippers threw up a big fat 0 across the first two innings, with the highlight being a Pat Brennan strikeout. Cifelli plated 3 in the same timeframe, thanks to singles and a double by Dylan Hildebrandt. After a quick tea break, the Yankee Clippers woke up in a big way, batting around and putting up 11 in the top of the 3rd. Five walks, doubles by Zach Downs and Glen Hipple, and triples by Kai Browner, Will Jensen, and Lonnie Snyder got YC on the board. Cifelli was shut out in the 3rd and 4th innings, before adding another 3 in the fifth courtesy of a two RBI triple by Mike Schoenagle. The Yankee Clippers added another 11 runs across the 4th and 5th from four walks, seven singles, and four doubles, courtesy of Zach Downs, Will Jensen, Connor Laigaie, and Mike O’Connor. The Clippers head to the bar early, and take this one by a score of 22-6.

Player of the Game: Will Jensen. It took him a game to “get loose” (sober up from a wedding the night before), but Jensen went 3-4 with a single, double, triple, 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored.

Philly’s Phinest vs. Dirt Stars

Dirt Stars come out strong to start this one plating 4 in the top of the 1st via walks, singles, and an RBI double and triple by the Dans. Philly’s Phinest took the first inning off, then decided to drop a 9er in the second inning, playing small ball along the way with three walks, five singles, and a bases clearing triple by Mike Rocks Sr. Dirt Stars’ bats stay quiet in the 2nd and 3rd innings, with a pair of singles and three walks failing to cross the plate. PP put up another 5 spot in the bottom of the third, led by back-to-back doubles from Tony Summers and Ray Rocks. Feeling the pressure, Dirt Stars respond heavy in the top of the fourth, knocking in 8 to cut the deficit to 2. Highlights were a Toby Carpino 3 run HR, and a XBH from John Boyle and Shawn Mackley. Four singles plate 2 more for Phinest in the bottom of the fourth, before having an 8 run inning of their own in the bottom of the fifth to run rule the Dirt Stars, 24-14.

Player of the Game: Close one between Tony Caprino and Nick Quartallo, but it’s going to Nicky Q for going 2-2 with two singles, two walks, two RBI, and a whopping four runs scored. Not bad for the 8 hitter.

B East MVP Race:

1. Cody Runner 8-9 four 1B, two 2B, two 3B, 6 RBI, 6 Rs in two games.

T-2. About 19 other people

Enjoy the Sunday off, we are back at it on 4/24.
