B East Championship 7/03/2022

Post by ntodd71 »

The quest for B East supremacy concluded as Palz Tap House and Purple Cobras went head-to-head for T-shirts and a plaque!

Game #1

Those scrappy underdogs from Palz Tap House were the road team to start this best of 3, plating a run in the top of the 1st via a Pete Herbert sac fly. The Purple Cobras must’ve started their July 4th festivities early, because their offense struggled to get going, failing to provide a run through the first 4 innings. Palz plated another run in the 2nd via a Danny Freeman sac fly, and another in the 3rd thanks to a Chris Croakhan fielder’s choice, before goose egging the 4th as well. Casey Long knocked in one more run for Palz at the top of the 5th to take a commanding 4-0 lead. The Purple Cobras finally woke up, knocking in 3 runs in the bottom of the 5th, thanks in part to back-to-back sac flies from Cody Larwa and Jose Villa, and an error. That was all the offense in this one, however, as Palz Tap House eked out a 4-3 win.

Game #2

“Let’s Go” Brandon Roman grabbed some leftover rum from the holiday weekend, and sacrificed it to Jobu in order to wake up the bats for the Purple Cobras. They scored one in the top of the 1st thanks to a Jordan Roman double. Palz, riding the momentum of game one, plated 2 of their own, via another Pete Herbert sac fly, and an RBI single by Kyle Greener. The Purple Cobras tie it right back up in the top of the 2nd, with a leadoff double by Pete Corrigan coming in to score from a Corey Larwa single. Palz bats go quiet over the next two innings, while Purple Cobras put up another 2 runs in the top of the 3rd. Back-to-back RBI singles by Jordan Roman and Tito “Jackson” Roman, paced the offense. PC then ran out to an 8-2 lead, scoring 4 more runs in the top of the 4th. An RBI triple from Mike Corrigan, and RBI doubles from Manny Rodriguez and Dan “the Man” Roman did the damage. Palz responded with a 4 spot of their own in the bottom of the inning with five walks and an error helping cut down the 6-run deficit. Cobras went quiet in the 5th, and Palz plated 1 more from a Danny Freeman solo HR to cut the lead down to 8-7. Dan ‘the Man’ Roman gets 1 more for Purple Cobras in the top of the 6th, via sac fly. Palz left a man on base and couldn’t muster a run in the bottom of the 6th. Purple Cobras, holding 2 and needing a win to go to a de facto game 3, score 1 more via another Manny Rodriguez double to extend the lead to 10-7. Palz, needing to score 4 to win the championship, flew out to left field, lined out to short, and flew out to right field to end the game. Purple Cobras take game 2 by a score of 10-7.

Game #3

Palz needed to come out with some fire to start game 3. The opposite happened, however, with them getting blanked in the top of the 1st. The Cobras get on the board when Mike Corrigan blasted a bases empty triple, and he gets knocked in by “Let’s Go” Brandon Roman, with an RBI single. Palz tie it up at 1 in the top of the 2nd, via a Louie Knoble sacrifice fly. The Purple Cobras get a spark, with four singles, and a 3 run HR by Cody “Road” Runner, for his first hit of the series, helping plate 4. Both teams go scoreless in the 3rd, and Casey Long gets Palz back on the board in the 4th with a solo HR. Purple Cobras plate another 3 runs, thanks to an RBI double from Manny Rodrigues, and another RBI triple by Mike Corrigan. Palz get 1 more back after a leadoff triple by Bob Jacob gets knocked in by a Louie Knoble single. Purple Cobras go down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 5th, holding on to an 8-3 lead. With two innings left, down 6, Palz cuts the lead to just 2, with a massive 3 run HR coming from leadoff hitter Jordan Cohen. Cobras plate 1 more in the bottom of the 6th, thanks to back-to-back doubles from Pete Corrigan and Corey Lawra to start the inning. Down 3 with the season on the line, Palz hits back-to-back grounders to 3rd for outs, get back-to-back singles, and then hit into a fielder’s choice to end the game. Purple Cobras win 9-6 and are your 2022 B East Spring Champions!

Championship MVP: Mike Corrigan. After starting out 0-3 in game 1, Corrigan turned it on in a big way for the Purple Cobras, going 6-8 with three singles and three triples in their two victories. He also scored 4 times and knocked in 2 RBIs.
