Player Of The Year Candidates for the 2023 regular and post season (below) have been formulated and are now posted.
Player Of The Year Candidates / Regular Season 2023
Regular Season POTY candidates are listed alphabetically (by first name) in each of the categories listed below. These files can be accessed by clicking the link(s) below, or from the Softball America home page (left side menu) League Statistics.
Men's League Player Of The Year
Male Coed (Core) Player Of The Year
Female Eddie Player Of The Year
Male Eddie Player Of The Year
To qualify for consideration in POTY categories, a core/all-star player must have a minimum of 72 plate appearances (ABs + BBs) for the year while male/female eddies are required to have not less than 54 plate appearances.
The candidates have been determined objectively by statistical formula employing 6 offensive categories. On every POTY page there is a link labeled Legend. The Legend contains a detailed explanation of each category and heading.
Offensive Categories
AB (at-bats), R% (runs scored per at-bat), RBI% (runs batted in per at-bat), Avg (batting average), Slg (slugging %)*, BB (bases on balls)
*slugging % is the total of singles (1 pt), doubles (2 pts), triples (3 pts), and home runs (4 pts) divided by total at-bats x 1000. A player with 1 single, 1 double, 1 triple, and 1 home run in 8 at-bats earns a slugging % of 1250 (1+2+3+4=10), divided by total at-bats [8] = 1.25 x 1000 = 1250.
Formula Calculations
Percentages are used instead of raw numbers because the number of games played among members varies greatly. A greater number of ABs will, however, reward a player for his/her ability to maintain good production over an extended period of time.
R%, RBI%, Avg, Slg and BB% carry the most weight in the formula while the total number of AB's carries the least weight.
Congratulations to all the candidates listed. Winners will be announced in the Softball America Year In Review Magazine, slated to be posted online in January. Trophies will be awarded to all winners at some point after the 2024 season commences. The final point totals will be posted on the website at some point after the winners are announced.
I put forth painstaking effort to ensure accuracy. Should you notice an error or an omission, please notify the league office at your earliest convenience.
Thank you,
Les Greenstein
