Finals: Purple Cobras vs One Hit Wonders

The Summer Championship is here for B North and we have a matchup between Purple Cobras and One Hit Wonders in a best of three series to determine a champion.

Game 1:

The championship got off to a slow start as both teams had no offense in the first and remained scoreless. One Hit Wonders would get on the board first in the top of the 2nd as they put up three runs on RBI singles by Tom O'Neil and Dan Croak and an RBI sac fly. Purple Cobras would get one back in the bottom of the 2nd on an RBI sac fly to make it 3-1 One Hit Wonders after the second. One Hit Wonders would extend their lead in the top of the 3rd after an RBI single by Nick Mariana to go up 4-1 after the third. After shutting down One Hit Wonders in the top of the 4th, the Purple Cobras' offense woke up and delivered five runs in the bottom of the 4th on RBI singles by Steve Gardener and Mike Corrigan, RBI double by Ty Allen and an RBI sac fly to take a 6-4 lead after the fourth. One Hit Wonders would get two men on in the top of the 5th, but a couple of flyouts would end the threat with no runs scored. Purple Cobras would continue to add on in the bottom of the 5th as they scored four more runs on an RBI single by Brandon Roman, RBI double by Dan Roman and a fielder's choice to go up 10-4 after the fifth. In the top of the 6th, One Hit Wonders would cut the deficit in half after scoring three runs on RBI singles by Andy Springer and Jimmy Cooker and an RBI double by Andrew Bougher. Purple Cobras would answer right back and pull away again as they scored six runs in the bottom of the 6th on RBI singles by Larry Larwa and Brandon Roman, RBI double by Dan Roman and an error as they blew the game open and now led 16-7 with only three outs to go to secure game one. In the top of the 7th, One Hit Wonders needed a lot to try an extend the game. Two quick outs put One Hit Wonders in almost in an impossible situation, but then they started to hit. A couple of singles and a walk got things going and then RBI singles by Jack Stepnowski and Mariana scored three runs to make it a 16-10 ball game with runners still in scoring position and a potential rally on deck. A fielder's choice would be the third out and the end the comeback hopes for One Hit Wonders. Purple Cobras offense pulls away late as they take Game 1 16-10 and one win away from a championship.

Game 2:

It was win or go home for One Hit Wonders in Game 2 as they tried to extend the series and force a Game 3 to keep their championship hopes alive. Purple Cobras would get started right where they left off in the top of the 1st as they scored six runs out of the gate on RBI singles by Ty Allen and Tim Gardner, RBI double by Steve Gardner and an RBI triple by Jordan Roman to go up 6-0. In the bottom of the 1st, One Hit Wonders would get a couple back after a sac fly and an RBI double by Andrew Bougher as Purple Cobras led 6-2 after the first. Purple Cobras kept their foot on the gas and scored three more runs on an RBI double by Allen and a two-run homer by Dan Roman. One Hit Wonders would push one across in the bottom half of the 2nd on an RBI single by Walt Zona as Purple Cobras led 9-3 after the second. Purple Cobras kept the run streak alive in the top of the 3rd as they pushed one more run across on an RBI single by Jose Villa. After two quick outs in the bottom of the 3rd, One Hit Wonders hit a couple singles to put a runner in scoring position. A fielder's choice the next batter would get Purple Cobras out of the threat as they now led 10-3 after the third. One Hit Wonders needed to find an answer on defense to keep them in the game, but Purple Cobras just kept hitting as they scored five more runs all by the Romans. Brandon and Jordan Roman both hit RBI singles and Dan Roman hit an RBI double as their lead now stood at 15-3 and putting One Hit Wonders in a huge hole. Two quick outs in the bottom of the 4th, did not help One Hit Wonders' cause as they would have to try and rally with two outs. A single would be all they could muster as Purple Cobras shut them down again on defense and gave them a chance to put the game away. In the top of the 5th, Purple Cobras would pour it on as they put up another five runs on RBI singles by Robby Villa, Dan Roman and Ty Allen, RBI double by Matt Meindl and an RBI triple by Jose Villa as they now led 20-3 and put themselves on the verge of a championship if they could hold One Hit Wonders to two or less runs in the bottom of the 5th. In the bottom of the 5th, One Hit Wonders got two men on base with a pair of singles and brought the extending run to the plate with two outs. A fly ball would be caught by Purple Cobras to secure the third out, end the game and bring home a championship. The Purple Cobras offense was too much as they won 20-3 over One Hit Wonders in Game 2 and won the summer championship. Congratulations to both teams and let's see if Purple Cobras will win another one in the Fall.
